Have you seen LBB in person?

I've seen it a few times now and have not once noticed any sort of green hue. If anything, it's much closer to MINI's electric blue than any other color.
Yea I saw it in person, the green tint pops out more in the shade

I've seen it in cloudy days, sunny days, shade in sunny days, parking garage and not once was there ever green.

I wonder how much variation there is car to car with LBB - say if some got slightly more green vs others.

I agree... the car is blue. In some lighting, it can take on a lighter blue tone (almost like a teal) but it is still VERY blue. Maybe on the greener side of blue (as opposed to the purple side) but I have not looked at it and thought "green" at all. Now, my AY M4 looked green sometimes but not my LBB M2

That's all he is saying. When there is ANY greenish /teal if one wants what is supposed to be BLUE ... Then It's a deal breaker for most people that actually want BLUE. Think Estoril ...

Understood... although I see really just light/dark blue

Color choice is a tough one and probably the most subjective part of any car buying decision!

Well then I guess he is saying "Light blue " sucks..

There is a serious variation from say..

YMB - light" baby " blue
LBB - blue with TEAL
Estoril blue - darker light blue
LE Mans Blue - cobalt - type blue
Orient Blue - Deep dark blue
Tanzanite Blue - Dark blue nearly black

As far as I am concerned... LBB is a color fad.. Right now teal-ish blue cars are all over the market... and DARK blue is not.

When the 1M came out.. the fad at the time was Orange.. Orange cars were everywhere from the Honda Element to the Hyundai Veloster. However.. while VO can look reddish at certain times... A true fan of RED would not be happy with VO just as many people today are not that enthralled with LBB if they like a traditional Blue rather than an Easter egg/Chiclet color..

Awesome review!

I do not think LBB is a fad color. It will look great 30+ years later. People will not hate the color years and years down the line. I still like the 1M VO 5-6 years later. The 1988 e30 M3 in Henna Red color still looks beautiful today. Was this a fad back in 1988? I do not know, but the color looks awesome till this day.

Great comments on the LBB. I was heavily debating LBB vs. AW, ended up going AW. I love blue, hate green (even though they are pretty close cousins on the spectrum). I also think the way people perceive colors are different. My green may not be as "green" as your green.

Either way both colors are amazing, i'm looking fwd to a classy clean look of the AW!

Useless post with redundant info warning...

I LOVE THIS CAR! It is so damn fun. It feels so small and I forgot how much I love that feeling. It sounds really, really, REALLY great! LBB just sparkles in the sun. It is just a blast to drive. The most fun to drive BMW I have owned without any doubt.

OK, so I apologize but I just had to post this Signing off and going back out for another drive

It's funny, I was actually thinking this exact same thing when I was writing my thoughts out.

Just to get out in front of some of those inevitable comments, let me clarify for those who need it.....

I actually took the car to my "proving grounds" where I can push it very hard before deciding to post this. I have hundreds of track hours in a number of cars and I actually think I'm relatively good at getting a sense for the car's true ability on the right back road even though I'm not quite at the car's limit. But, as you point out, I was thinking that many will discount my opinion (even though it is just MY opinion) because I wasn't actually at a track... even though most of them will NEVER be at a track anyway

You know, I actually would love to be an auto journalist... how cool would that job be!! The problem is then I actually wouldn't be able to afford the M4 I just sold after two years of ownership (or the C7 Z51, or the C63 coupe, or my two E92 M3's).

Some may not believe me but I don't keep cars long enough to feel the need to "justify my purchase" Had my initial concern remained after a few weeks of ownership, I would have sold the M2 and bought something else Life is FAR too short to hold onto a car you don't really like if there is a better option you could have. If I wanted my M4 back, I'd have my M4 back That doesn't mean I won't want another some day but, today, the M2 is the better car for me given what I'm looking for in a car.

Did you cross shop the M3 CP?

Yes but rules out the M4 CP early on. If I option an M4 CP in Canada the way I want, it is over $100,000. If I spend that much, it will be on a 911 and not a BMW

Having said that, I may still be back in an M4 CP after the M2. It's possible. Maybe unlikely, however. Having too much fun in the M2.

Actually I have a question. You had 2 DCT cars before.

Why do you choose 6MT over DCT for your M2?

Simple answer. Primarily change.

I like having different car experiences. I really like and appreciate both DCT and MT cars. I've gone back and forth a bit between them over time... MT E92 M3, DCT E92 M3, MT C7, DCT M4 and now the MT M2. All about keeping it fresh

For the M2, I actually thought the MT would fit its character well. Better than the an MT fitting the M4. I never even considered a MT for the M4 because, IMO, a DCT worked well for that car but I knew from the beginning that I wanted the MT for the M2. It's a smaller car, a bit more nimble and raw... seemed to be better match with a more analog manual transmission.

Nice write-up

I had a test M2 DCT for 3 hours, a M2 manual for 1 hour and a M4 DCT for 1 hour. The first testdrive was with the M2 DCT. When I picked up the M2 it already won me over after 15min of testing and I was tempted to buy a M2 DCT. Then I needed to decide the color and gearbox...so I also did a test with a manual M2 and again with a M4 DCT (back to back).

In the past I borrowed an e90 M3 DCT from a friend for one week and lived with it on a daily basis. I did not like the gearbox in city and slow stop and go traffic (I hated it when parking in tight spots). On normal roads the DCT made me want to drive the car realy fast to enjoy the fast shifts. For me the DCT gearbox is at his best when driving realy fast or on a track...then it is an extra value and awesome piece (personal opinion). After two days in city traffic I stopped using the manual gearshifts of the DKG and just put it in D... It made me feel like a leazy driver in the e90 M3.

I have read almost every review about the M2 and how good and involving the manual gearbox is suppose to be. So I also did a test drive with a manual M2. The manual gearbox of the M2 is not perfect! The clutch pedal felt really soft...for me it could be a little heavier with more feeling...but it is not that big of an issue. The movement of the cluth pedal is really long (a lot longer then on my Z4M and e46 325i). I was amazed at how long the travel of the clutch pedal is and that I never saw it mentioned in any review? When releasing the clutch your knee gets really high...the end of the movement of the cluth is rather high (if you know what I mean)

With the manual gearbox you can feel the effect of turbo lag a little more then with the DCT. THe DCT shifts faster so there is less drop in rev's. The DCT has 7 instead of 6 gears, so the gearing is also shorter and it feels that you keep the engine more in the powerband with feeling less turbo lag.

When I made my pro & con's list…the DCT had more con's for me then the manual. IMO the M2 is a car that is more about involvement and a little back to basic driving pleasure (in a modern package). I felt the manual gearbox suited the M2 personality better. With the bigger f80 M3/M4 I would probably also choose DCT. It's a great gearbox and I understand why people would like to have it.... In the end I choose the gearbox with the heart and I also ordered a manual M2.
