The F90 M5 is immensely capable in the twisties. It doesn't have the feel or immediate turn in of the M2C but it clearly gets the job done. I've gotten several track rides with pro drivers and I've driven it at the performance center back to back with M2s and M4s. It holds its own yet provides top luxury at the same time. If I go back to one car, it would be the one.

I also wanted a small car that I could enjoy, and so the M2 seems to check every box. The only other "small" car i was interested in wat the 718, but was not interested in a 4 banger which was available back then...maybe next time.

I'm not a showy person, so buying the biggest M out there was not a motivator for me, and I couldn't care what people think. I also have multiple cars at home so making a small coupe decision was easy. There are people on this board who will be surprised that 40, 50, 60 70 somethings will buy this car, but in my experience I've seen a dude in his 60s, a dude in his 70s driving this thing, so there really is no right age. Do what you want, and drive what you want. Having owned the M2 for 8 months now, I can only say I love this car and very glad I bought it.
Yeah, the M5 seems more "age appropriate" but even though it's way more expensive, I have no interest in it after having the Model S for a few years. Going really fast in a straight line while feeling nothing is not that satisfying for me.

I always wanted a BMW since I was a kid. An M car was unimaginable. I did get an E90 335 when I got older and drove that for 10 years. I still miss it. The M2C reminds me of the E90, only better.

Great to hear I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I have yet to meet someone who got rid of their fancy Tesla to get into a smaller "ICE" car. I know people who own both a Tesla and a sports car, but with only one car I only hear of people going from BMW/Porsche to Tesla. Not the other way around.
The M5 may be more "age appropriate" but it has no soul! (Sorry M5 owners) Don't care about what others think, no one is gonna look at you and say "aren't you a bit too old to drive that?" They're just gonna look at you and assume you're just another a**hole BMW driver For the price of an M5 you could get a nice M2 and a nice daily 5-series (or other good dailies)... Just get a fun car, also I'd argue the majority of M owners are older clientele seeing that we can more than likely afford them over younger buyers.

And most M5 owners (at least the ones I know) couldn't tell you much about their car, besides that its fast and cool. I think folks like us older guys driving M2s know a lot more about our cars, and bought them for a reason.

Exactly, the M5 is pretty much an ICE Tesla. Impressive in the straights, boring elsewhere. You'd be surprised how many people on the M5 forums admit that their cars are boring. I could never spend $100k+ on a car that I know and find boring. Straight lines get boring, I like to drive on backroads and enjoy my time on the track. M2 is the only modern BMW I would (and did) buy today for fun, its for the BMW enthusiast. The current F87 is having its E39 moment. Aside from steering and being a bit heavy, it masters most aspects that we loved about BMW's, and BMW has a problem on their hands in improving the next M2 without screwing it up based on their current track record.

The M5 may be unexciting as a daily driver (because its limits are so high and luxury is an equal priority but boring cars can't do this... That's me in the back seat at the 0:30 mark.

The M5 is very capable, I do agree to that, and I even had some track time with it when it first came out, but It doesn't change my opinion of the car. I haven't really liked any 5-series in general since the E60. I inherited my mother's G30 and that didn't sweeten things. I would get an E63S over an M5 if I were shopping in that class, although neither can hold a candle to the CTS-V, shame about the interior though.

I agree with you that the M5 is a great car, but you cant drive it like that daily. I feel like I can do that with my M2 though (joking, but only half-joking)

I have done a track weekend with my M2C at VIR. It's quite capable out of the box on a big track like that. I'm the first to admit that I'm not at the pro level but still get a lot out of the car and the experience. Note I've had many BMWs there over the years but have yet to go for a dedicated track car. That and the fact that its only 1-2 times per year has kept my skill level from progressing beyond intermediate.

A few VIR laps in 2019: https://vimeo.com/364518067

Just for fun, I compared laps times:
M5 (assume nearly full lap with no cuts) pro driver, 3 passengers, demonstration lap no helmets.
M2C amateur driver, dedicated track day, helmets, and I was 7 seconds slower for the same section (full lap except for front straight).

I had the F90 competition for a year and then sold it. It was a fast car but not entertaining enough.

This is definitely a first world problem, but now that the Tesla tech amazingness has worn off, I just drive it around like a minivan. Whenever I hear Elon Musk talk about the next advance in self driving, rather than being appropriately excited, I think.. oh great, so we will make driving even more boring.

I test drove a M2C about a year ago and my reaction was.. "it's alive!" I loved it. But at "my age" I'm debating if an M3/M4 is more appropriate. Or even a 911, although I'm loathe to spend that kind of money on a car. Is the M2C more of a car for 20 year olds or 30 year olds? This sounds like a stupid question in my head even as I type it. But it's a thing. You know, I shouldn't be wearing skinny jeans at some point either (not that they fit me, but you know what I mean).
I'm 31 and has the choice between M2C, Model 3 (performance) and a used 911. I'm happy with my decision to get the M2C honestly; fuck what people think about age relative to a car. I'm an old soul compared to my peers anyway 🤓

Not sure how any 20 something can afford a $60K car. When i was 25 i bought a new 350Z and that was at the upper end of my budget.

My point of view is that you eventually "get over" most things in life. This applies to women (or men), food, traveling, cars, etc.

So...if you want an M2 (or whatever car) and can responsibly afford it (based on your financial situation), just buy it and enjoy the crap out of it for as long as you possibly can until you inevitably get over it. Your age is irrelevant.

Yeah unless you live in a super rich neighborhood and its daddies money or, if you just happen to be a SWE in the Silicon valley then its possible, however i've found most people in the latter position tend to gravitate towards the Porsche Cayman.

At 34, I'm one of the younger folks here, so allow me to add an alternative perspective, to this resounding echo chamber of beliefs.

First of all, no car should define a person and a lot of you guys here are cool, like-minded people, so I could careless how old you are or what car you choose to drive and consequently, you should not have to justify their choice of automobiles. That's my standard..

I feel like that a lot of life's problems stem from misunderstandings. No one takes the time to get to know someone or why they might think or tick a certain way, before their own preset prejudices and preconceived notions kicks in.

That said, if you're over a middle-age, with flashy car, with big wheels and an exhaust burping and blaring down the boulevard, you're going to get a lot of side-eyes and head-scratching, even if no one explicitly makes it obvious. All people have opinions or preconceived biases but are just not confrontational, so you just never know.

Sorry, I don't make the rules 🤷🏻.. Some people will never get the fact that we petrolheads buy cars for the purpose of having fun driving them and the added flamboyance just comes with the territory..

A douchy, boisterous machines are only really given a pass in society, if it's something like a 1/2 million dollar exotic sports car because duh..

The M2 comes off as a sweet, small, top-tier BMW coupe. With the same breath, it's also sort of flashy and noisy, that sometimes scream "Hey, look at me." Something that usually appeals to only the younger crowd.

A mature adults are usually introverted and drives cars that match their personality; (calm, quiet, not-tailhappy, ect) and gravitating towards automobiles that's more subtle in attitude.

So, you can see why I believe some feel kind the M2 would not appeal to a grown demographic and anyone above that age bracket, who chooses to drives one, is sort of going against the grain.

In conclusion, if you feel like the M2 is the right car for you. I say shrug off that nagging feeling, step on the gas and blast away from societal pressure.

I'm 55, and I am buying the M2C because it's the best bang for the buck BMW currently offers, and possibly their best performance car. I thought about waiting for the new M3 since that will also be available with a 6MT, but I think the M2C fits my lifestyle right now for the following reasons: Kids are grown, so as empty-nesters, we don't need a 4-door sedan anymore; we moved to Florida from Michigan, so RWD is now okay all year; and the small gas tank with need for frequent pitstops will be a perfect match for my need for frequent pitstops.

What are the odds that the next version of the M2C will not be as good as the current one? I am afraid, given current trends.

And the analog part you mention almost pushes me over the edge to want a manual transmission. Even though the DCT is better for my commute and will be better if I ever track the car where I find it difficult to take my newbie white knuckles off the steering wheel.

I was looking at the same options. Fit and finish of the Model 3 was too much of a concern for me, and I wanted a manual. The 911 and Cayman were attractive options and fun, but I got so turned off by all the options and that whole buying experience. The M2C felt like a great middle option—fun and exciting, yet much more practical than the Porsches. Plus, the tech in the older Porsche’s (sans CarPlay) wasn’t going to do it for me.
