Lack of oil and coolant temps fixed by M Performance Electronic Wheel?
Due to my past experience tracking a N55 car (that needed to be modified for both coolant and oil cooling), I believe the biggest flaw of the M2 is not having real coolant or oil temp gauges. The lack of an oil temp gauge is criminal on this car as I have seen oil temps approaching 300f before I upgraded my cooling.
I was looking at the M Performance Electronic Wheel, and based on the past wheels it appears that it may be able to display exact coolant and oil temp? It seems that the e9x series ones could at least. If so, this wheel may be a must-have. The only thing that concerns me is if it will be compatible with a JB4 due to canbus conflicts. I may have to bite the bullet and get the car flash tuned (better anyway) because having an oil and coolant temp gauge is simply not optional if you plan on tracking the car. |

I appreciate this isn't ideal but the onboard temp meter is a combination of both coolant and oil. Can see why you'd like separate accurate readings however.

This is another option, I don't like the idea of giving up a vent though

And there's also this free option
http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=984491 you can access certain information through a secret menu in the instrument cluster. Although you have to do it every time, once you activate the temp readings, it stays on the entire duration until you turn off the car, useful if you only need it for track days. There's also a few other options discussed in that thread. |

Having used the hidden menu to keep an eye on my temps on track on my completely stock N55 M235i, I can guarantee you this is a non issue. The temps never budged the entire session, all day.
The M2 will have even better cooling. Your experience in an N55 car is not a good indicator, it must have been a 335 or something else with much inferior cooling. |

The problem with the P3 and Arwon gauges is that you can't use a JB4 with them, which basically means you can't tune your car unless you go to one of a few shops in the country that can flash tune.

Not according to numerous reports and direct from Terry himself, which I have verified. The two conflict on CANBUS data which slows the refresh rate of the JB4, leading to strange errors and less accuracy of tuning/boost control. Any gauges that are hooked analogue to the P3 will work, but the Canbus data will not be reliable.

You can't guarantee anything. Maybe he has a mechanical issue leading to elevated temps. Maybe a piece of debris is blocking one of the coolers. Maybe he simply drives harder. Maybe ambient is hotter where he's running. Maybe his car is making more power than stock, and thus, making a lot of extra heat. Ridiculous assumptions on your end. Your M235 didn't overheat on you, so the M2 will never overheat on anyone?

But having said that, I am very confident that a stock M2 will have more than adequate cooling for any conditions. Again that does not mean you should not monitor the temps just in case something goes wrong. |

Early n54s had no auxiliary oil cooler and there was a lot of limp mode reports at the track. I personally saw them. I was tracking an e90 330 at the time. then they added an oil cooler as standard and the reports substantially disappeared. then came the n55 but day 1 with the oil cooler. again some reports but seemingly only as many at the n54s with oil cooler. I bought a 135is which has an additional coolant radiator same as that with the ppk2. I have had zero issues after many track days. my first couple events in warm weather I was concerned for the same reasons you are suggesting. after a few trouble free events I don't even think about it.
the m2 has yet an additional large Trans cooler on an n55 and similar dct Trans as my 135is. time will tell whether there is an issue but I'm not concerned at all. As far as having a gauge I would love one too just cause I like to track these types of things mentally and frankly am curious and want to know. if I don't have one though that comes with the car I'm OK since it would be a want and not a need. first purchase for my m2 which is in production right now will likely be tracks pads.

I wonder if this can be coded to display just the oil temp and not the coolant/oil temp calculation that comes stock?

You can also get the torque app and bluetooth module and set up your own display. It even has a function where it inverses the image so you can reflect it off the front window making it a HUD. Not bad for $25.
