bootmod3: Map Switching (DEMO) - Advanced End User/Tuning Features (Part 2)

Hey guys, since our initial demo on map switching we've made great progress with further changes to how on the fly map switching works. Our previous thread here:

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1755987

In this video we're demoing an update for on the fly map switching where we've moved map switch controls to the steering wheel cruise buttons, and also the bootmod3 app in this case running on an iPhone 11 Pro. Status of the map is displayed on the dash cluster on the tach (RPM) gauge (1000rpm = map 1, 2000rpm = map2, 3000rpm = map3, 4000rpm = map4), as well as in the app on the new screen made for this purpose.

On the steering wheel, you activate it by pressing the Resume button, and switch among 4 map slots (expandable if needed at a future date) by using the up/down button that are typically used to increase/decrease speed when cruise control is active. OEM cruise control functionality remains in tact and map switching can be done with the engine off, on and while driving.

In the bootmod3 app, we've created a new screen to show current map slot and trigger on the fly map switching as well.

This video was done on our 2015 F80 M3 with the MEVD17.2.G DME and applies to all S55 engine vehicles. Support for these features is in progress for all other vehicle models bootmod3 supports today.

Enjoy the vid while we continue making progress with many other advanced tuning features such as BM3 FlexFuel, Antilag and many others.

Difference is, we have killer OTS maps to go with it, better than most all expensive custom tunes out there.

Altho, I do want to see the custom tune on that Stage 3 Speedtech.

That is a question for eidos and nothingman is headed for a similar path.

Altho, it’s hard to beat the value in adding an HPFP, some ethanol, and the OTS BM3 Stg 2+ E30 map for 425-430whp and then a PS2 for 500+ whp!

And, if you happen to not find some ethanol, flip the steering wheel button to switch to 93, or the new Stg 2+ Race Gas map. Very convenient.

have not flashed a new map for a long time. When this comes to n55 I guess I'll finally update as it might be fun to easily switch between stock map and ACN 91(cry)

Out of curiosity as I didn't go that route, how much is BM3 plus a custom tune? I see that a lot of people go that route.

With the new OTS maps putting out as much or more power than custom tunes, there’s no need to go custom unless you’re putting on a large non-hybrid turbo, tuning with WMI, or some other special case.

So, ~$600 gets you the platform and all the OTS maps!

But everyone's gas is different. If you still have to log and change maps for the gas in your area I'd still rather have a tuner check logs and tweak for your particular mods and fuel. Had I gone BM3 I would have gone custom tune as well just for my own piece of mind.

There’s enough flexibility with the OTS maps: you have ACN for crappy gas, 91, 93, E30, and Race Gas maps.

And by design, the OTS maps do a better job at adapting to varying fuel quality and ambient conditions throughout the year than the custom tunes.

I’m not speaking out of turn. I have >1000 3-4-5 pulls in hundreds of logs between the various maps and have also tried custom tunes. There’s no need to go custom with the new OTS maps.

But, if you want to try, get a custom tune and put it on the dyno next to the OTS to see if the custom tune cost was worth it. It wasn’t for me and some of the guys running the new OTS map versions.

I don't see myself buying BM3 for comparative purposes. There's also not a decent dyno within 90 miles or so around me.

Who was writing the custom tunes you're referring to?

Got it.

Well, $600 for a suite of Stg 1/2/2+ ACN, 91, 93, E30, and Race Gas OTS maps that are better than comparative custom maps, along with map switching and easy phone flashing make BM3 probably the best performance bargain out there for our cars.

Cary tried tuning my car, but it wasn’t as good as the new OTS. He said “it couldn’t possibly be him bc he’s tuned 1000’s of BMW’s”. When I explained that the OTS was doing better and asked for a partial refund to cover some of his time (even tho his map wasn’t as good) he said no.

I’m not the only one. Do some digging and you’ll find the Youtube video of an M2 guy who dyno’ed worse with Cary’s map vs OTS. But, this issue isn’t exclusive to Cary. The latest gen BM3 OTS maps are in a league of their own.

No question. Still curious as to who was writing the inferior custom maps.

I edited my post above.

We should probably move any other custom vs OTS discussion to a different thread, since this one is focused on map switching. Even tho it’s all BM3 related.
