Isn't that the top layer lacquer they use?

I think a detailer can remove that and make it nice.

Some of it is in the clearcoat but some is a result of the base coats. Since modern OEM clear is so thin, it could be compromised by wetsanding to remove it. Could also compromise the UV protection.

Yes, by wetsanding.

I wouldn't be too anxious to grind off layers of paint on my new toy :-)

I know that. I was just commenting on the way it's looks on the M2C. The mirrors look better on the M3/M4 than on the M2C IMO. It could be I'm just more familiar with seeing them on the larger M cars. They just look unusual to me on the M2C from different angles, just like the aftermarket mirror caps look unusual on the OG M2.

The M2C M mirrors look better than the aftermarket mirror caps made for the OG M2 IMO, but the bottom line with me is I'm not sure that I'm much of a fan of either.

I can't believe how few people understand this. And I've stated it several times

It's a PAINT SYSTEM thang .. get over it.

http://compressors.matteicomp.com/bl...tomotive-paint

This ain't turning around just like mechanical steering ain't coming back and just like NA motors are being replaced with turbos.

The paint looks that way because it looks that way. It's not due to poor application and it doesn't need to be " remedied".

If you don't like it WRAP your car.

The fact that Bmw is now using a water borne paint system is why we have colors like Estoril Blue II. The original solvent based color - Estoril Blue - from the 90s is not environmentally friendly and was redesigned for the current paint systems.

There are many classic colors that BMW hasn't reproduced because of this issue including one of the e36 violets.

Wrong. Even if water-based systems create more, it is still up to the manufacturer to decide how to control the application and subsequent fixing of the defect. Many C7 Corvettes have horrific orange peel, worse than other GM cars, due to application defects. You won't see any of this on a Bentley which is painted using the same process. Why? Because they remove it. You can't remove it on a BMW safely because they use just microns of clear. Good body shops will spray extra clear and wetsand to remove it.

I have polished an E36 and found it was using single-stage paint still. I don't know if every color was single stage on an E36 but really it is a completely different animal, and who cares what was done 20 years ago. The fact is, there is not the level of care that Lexus has on the finish, nevermind Bentley. You can see unpainted areas on most 2 series if you open the doors and look in. It's called cost cutting.

It's not a surprise to most of us that BMWs are better painted than Chevrolets.

Buying a Bentley sure is spendy to get a good paint job. :

BMW can alter their process as well but then goes the opposite and no clear. They also charge more and call it FROZEN.

So. wrap it or go frozen. Or .. buy a Bentley

I'm not sure you fully read my post. Not all BMWs are better than all GM cars. If it was all due to the VOC free process as you claimed it would be a consistent problem among makes and models, but it's not entirely.

I hate to break it to you but frozen is just a partially opaque clearcoat and applied in the same way.

People are allowed to complain about paint worse than on an E46 M3 if they are allowed to endlessly drone on about steering, exhaust note, 5% weight differences, or whatever else isn't as good as it was in the good ol' days.

Then frame your conversation that way instead of making people have a complex about their paint ?

Wax on about the good old days but don't use a term that implies the paint is defective. You slandered paint of all bmws.
