New Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connected Smart Tire Will Debut on the BMW M2 CS
BIMMERPOST NEWS New Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connected Smart Tire Will Debut on the BMW M2 CS New MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tire Faster, longer-lasting performance, 100% Connect Ready June 10, 2020 The new MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tyre has been designed with an integrated container intended to receive a sensor, which make it the first 100% Connect Ready tyre on the market. Users then just have to insert the MICHELIN Track Connect solution sensors in order to take advantage of the multiple functionalities of the solution and optimize their performance even more during track days. Dedicated to 80% on track and 20% on the road, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tyre remain versatile for an everyday use while offering high potential on track. • Gain of 7.29 seconds after 10 laps (2) • Designed for high performance and sports vehicles • 41 sizes available for more than 180 vehicle models • Connectable with MICHELIN Track Connect in all dimensions • World premiere : the BMW M2 CS will be the first car fitted with MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 Connect tyres as original equipment New architecture for more stability and more security To combine both excellent feeling and high efficiency, the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tyre combines in its construction two polyester plies, two steel plies and a polyamide ply. It also benefits from several advanced technologies : Wavy Summit Architecture: waving of the summit plies by addition of rubber under the structural steel cable of the tyre, giving the advantage of reducing response time and increasing the feeling of sportiness behind the wheel. Dynamic Response Technology: high density aramid and nylon hybrid belt which promotes driving precision and tyre behavior under load. This belt, which is located just below the tread, is both very resistant and light. Thus, at equivalent weight, the associated nylon and aramid are five times more resistant than steel. These technical improvements allow higher cornering speeds and excellent stability at high speeds. On the track, this also results into better lap times (2) and more safety on the circuit and on the road.

Very interesting! tyre technology is getting better and better. I wonder what the increase in cost will be over the standard Cup 2 tyres.

Provides a single sensor per tire analysis of temp and pressure. Then feeds this into an algorithm that contains the car factory data for at least the weight. Then gives recommendation for tire pressure in current conditions. It's not nearly as informative as a 16pt heat map across the tire width, but the user doesn't have to mine the data and interpret the results. For the price, I'd find it useful for analyzing my driving style and adjusting tire pressure to equalize tire warm up. On the track I think some of the Michelin supplies information would be quite useful for track days. I think tire and pressure data can be reported over an entire run, which is better than a couple IR readings after a run.

Pretty cool. Wonder how much of a premium it will require though.

I believe it to be a standalone unit for $499 US, which includes 4 tire sensors iirc. I was hoping it was integrated into the idrive, but I think that is too much optimism. I'm not even sure the CS will come with the sensors. Hopefully the system is available at the time of purchase so the tires don't have to be unmounted and mounted at owners expense to install the sensors.

We need to get BLM to review this to see if there is any systemic racism built into this technology.

I got told this today by the M2 project lead at BMW M:
The Michelin Cup 2 tire on the M2 CS was specifically designed for the new CS, and is now available for us all to buy. The tire is major improvement over the standard one, which we all have been using the past years. It comes with the tire connect app sensors installed and has the velvet tire walls. I will get more info from Michelin on the tire early next week. First information has told me that the side walls are a lot harder to deal with heavier cars. MR |

What about the box in this kit that must be plugged in? It's what the phone and sensors connect to?
The MICHELIN® Track Connect® Kit is sold ready to use. It is composed of four sensors, a receiver box, two power cords (one short and one long), a cigarette lighter/USB adapter, and a phone holder. The kit is reusable from one set of tires to another, and you don’t need to repurchase the kit each time you change tires, as the sensors and receiver are fully reusable. |

Guys, I received the information from Michelin on the new Cup 2 for the M2. Tyres aren’t released yet. Due to be released in July.
Production numbers are: 120817 245s and 266154 265s. Both are Pilot Sport Cup 2 * DT1 Connect tyres, which are homologated by BMW to be used on your car. They will premiere on the M2 CS, but can also be used on the M2 and M2C. The sensor kit is not included and costs an additional 500 GBP. The sensors are installed when you fit the tires and the control box needs USB power. You can fit that near a USB port. App you can install on your phone. |

I checked on tirerack (I couldn't find a 265/35/19 tire, the closest they had was 265/30/19) and it looks like it's ~$250 more per set of 4 tires over the regular cup 2's at stock size. Including the $500 receiver, that's a hefty price tag for a set of tires, although if michelin expands their connected lineup going forward then it can be amortized.
Curious to see when people receive their CS's to see if it's worth the price tag. |

It appears to be a track tool, so if you aren't chasing track times it would be a slightly useful toy. Techies such as myself would probably get it just to see how it works 😂.
