BMW M2 CS owners required to sign waiver in US regarding PS Cup 2 Tires

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
For those of you wanting to get your hands on a M2 CS here is the waiver you will need to sign prior to delivery.

2020 BMW M2 CS Tire Information
VIN: __________________________________________________ _______

BEFORE TAKING DELIVERY OF YOUR BMW M2 CS, PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE THE FOLLOWING TIRE CHARACTERISTICS AND LIMITATIONS BY SIGNING BELOW.

The 2020- BMW M2 CS is factory-equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, 245/35 R19 front, and 265/35 R20 rear. These tires are optimized for performance, with extreme traction on dry roads, but have the following limitations:

• Higher tire wear which will result in shorter mileage before the minimum tread depth is reached.

• Due to the special tire tread, there is an increased risk of hydroplaning on wet or slushy roads,so reduced speed on wet or slushy roads. If you do not reduce speed, a wedge of water can form between the tires and the road surface. This state is known as hydroplaning and can resultin a loss of vehicle control and a loss of braking power.

• As with all performance tires, the tire grip decreases significantly at low outside temperatures and tire operating temperatures, which may lead to loss of control of the vehicle. If you intend to drive the vehicle at outside temperatures of less than 45˚F, change to winter tires.

• Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires may also lose some of their flexibility when stored and/or operated in temperatures below 32˚F. This loss of flexibility can lead to cracking and other damage to the tires. DO NOT USE OR STORE THE TIRES IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 32˚F.

• REPLACE TIRES THAT DISPLAY ANY SIGN OF CRACKING.

• During prolonged periods of non-use or storage, Michelin recommends deflating the tires to half normal pressure and store without any load on them. Before fitting/dismounting these tires,
they should be stored at a temperature of at least 68˚F until such time as the temperature of the tire has stabilized at room temperature.

• Inform all drivers who use the vehicle of these limitations.

We value you as a BMW M2 CS customer and want to provide information on the merits and the limitations of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, so that you can decide for yourself which tire is best suited for your driving style and climate.

I, _________________________________________________, have read and fully understand this disclosure and wish to take delivery with the optional factory-supplied, Michelin Sport Cup 2 performance tires. I also acknowledge that I will equip my vehicle with winter tires for use in temperatures below 45˚F.

Should be a quick fix as the tires will wear out rapidly and need replacing with a wider size

iirc, hydroplaning starts at 9x the square root of the tire pressure.

So, problem solved!

I was planning to get my CS with the cup2s because racecar, but I'm having second thoughts because of my use. It gets cold in the winter here. Delivery Nov/Dec and we get a reasonable amount of rain year round. Very infrequent track use, mostly city commuting and occasional hwy.

1. Take delivery with cup2s for warmer months and buy a set of PS4S for the winter. There are a couple of months where the temp will occasionally drop below 32F. 40s and wet will happen.

2. Just get a set of PS4S and use 100% of the time. I'm not buying a second set of wheels.

3. Run the cup2s and accept being careful in cold and/or wet.

As is, I have to be careful in the cold and wet. Mainly wet with my Pirelli p-zeros. Any standing water causes issues. Luckily I can change driving modes for a 50/50 bias front and rear to help. No such option with CS. I'm leaning towards Option 2.

Not really, that's a standard BMW disclaimer when a street vehicle is fitted with semi-slick tires.

The E46 M3 CSL came with the same warning, which was a vehicle that never made it to North America.

Ha, so I feel a small bit better about our legal system. Does anyone know if the same waiver for the M2CS applies to other countries?

That's a funny thing to say, at the moment, considering that the streets currently looks like Gotham, at the end of the "Joker" movie..

Never really gets cold enough down here. The aquaplaning I've experienced on Michelin tyres before so well aware of this part!

I just went trough a set of Cup2 on my M2, 9 track days and around 4000km.

Unless you really can't have another set of wheels and tires and need max performance on track I don't think it's worth it to run them.

They are way less comfortable than MP4S, the Cup2 as a very stiff construction. Every rock rock or pebble sticks to then, they are noisier, they hate cold, there not very good in the rain and they absolutely hate being at the wrong pressure.

In my case the wear I got was very uneven also. It's really a track tire than can be driven to and from the track. BMW really puts them on these cars to boost performance specs but 99% of owners will be much better served with the MP4S and for the rest, a second set of wheels with a track tire like NT01, A052, RE71, RS4 etc. make a lot more sens.

You can totally track your car on MP4S and have a blast, it's such a great tire. One could argue that the M2CS suspension will get tuned to take advantage of the Cup2, I doubt it but it remains to be seen.

I love the fact that you plan on driving your CS in the winter , too much wasted lifetime driving staring at it from November to April .

Yep, It's replacing my current DD. Actually, it will get driven more since I'm getting rid of my beater that I tend to drive when it rains to reduce how often I have to wash the jag.

A Lotus owner also pointed out uneven tire-wear of his PS Cup 2 tires (2019):

He inquired and Michelin responded (2020):
uneven tire-wear is not by coincidence; by design, the PS Cup 2 tire is optimized for track days, knowing that most tracks turn clockwise; the tires are supposed to be swapped over from left to right in-between track days:

Conclusion: you get better longevity of the PS Cup 2 tires if you swap the tires from left to right in-between track days; if you don't, on most race tracks the left tire will be worn out sooner, requiring replacement of both; a story about design and optimized tire compound for the best grip (especially in the corners).

If you want to be on the safe side on public roads - from both a driving safety and insurance perspective - skip the PS Cup 2 tires and opt for the alternative tire offered by BMW for the M2 CS (likely the Pilot Super Sport).

Michelin:
  • dry: #1 PS Cup 2 | #2 PS4S | #3 PSS
  • wet: #1 PS4S | #2 PSS | #3 PS Cup 2

PS4S vs Cup2 (2018):

PS4 vs PS4S vs Cup2 (2018):

PS4S tires don't like temps below 30 degrees

Better get Pilot Sport A/S 3+ for those temperatures
