Oof, I feel your pain; had the car for just over two months now, and I got one as well...
If paying out of pocket/not going through insurance, I would suggest looking around for other reputable windshield repair guys in your area to do it for you other than the default Safelite. Was quoted $130 at Safelite, but was able to get a local windshield repair guy come out to my house (with Safelite, that would have been an additional charge) and fill the chip/crack for $60. Guy who did it had all the right tools, 20+ years of experience, and warranties his work for the life of the windshield. Seamless repair with no issues; couldn't ask for more!

I got a rock chip on mine that turned into a crack after like 5 months of taking delivery. Safellite fixed it but I went thru my insurance, only paid deductible (which was still $500 for me though). Definitely try to just fill it if that is possible (if its just a small chip), but if there is a crack you have to replace it.
Make sure to double confirm that they are installing OEM glass if you do end up replacing it. |

took your guys' advice and bought a chip repair kit. did it just like the video above. it filled in the spider cracks and the 1/2 moon chip inside the glass (like literally in the glass, not on the interior). it still has a very small visual 'chip,' but only if you are looking for it and know where to look for it.

I have some experience with this as I work for a very high end car dealership as a service consultant and I’ve handled dozens and dozens of cracked windshields, dealt with safelite, dealt with insurance companies, seen every scenario play out. Based on my experience, here is my opinion: Under no circumstances should you let safelite touch your vehicle. If they put a knife to my throat, I still wouldn’t let them touch my M2. Go to a dealership where they do the install in house. Most places have a few technicians that install the windshield. Your insurance company will try and force you to use safelite and aftermarket glass. Under no circumstances do you have to agree to this. You need to insist they use factory OEM glass and you will not accept anything less than that.
Triple confirm it is the OEM glass. You definitely don’t want the aftermarket glass. It’s prone to fogging up and oncoming lights of vehicles will have more glare, especially if it’s raining. Just my opinion. Good luck my friend. |

I have a chip just to the right of the rain sensor which I never see from inside and not as visible from outside due to the black dots surrounding the rain sensor. I'll eventually fill it it. |

Who do you have for insurance and will they cover the repair cost for you?
USAA will send Safelite to repair windshields for free and they only charge your deductible if the windshield has to be replaced. I've have had a few free repairs done this way. Not sure if other insurance companies do this but it would be worth checking your policy. |

I had a aftermarket Fuyao windshield installed on my Mazda and it was better than the factory St Gobain glass surprisingly.

I've busted 3 windshields on my Golf R in the last FIVE MONTHS. 55k+ miles before that with only one minor star repair. Then BOOM BOOM BOOM 3 of em destroyed. Latest replacement happens next Monday. None of the 3 were from the lane directly ahead of me, all came from the side, making them virtually impossible to avoid by keeping a long following distance. Arizona is just horrendous for windshield damage.
The factory glass on my M2 withstood a pretty severe impact in its first year, but just resulted in a star that didn't spread, and the repair was done so well it's 99% not visible, and you'd never find it if I didn't point it out. I wouldn't attempt a home repair, get a reputable glass repair guy to do it - the good ones do really great work, kinda like the good PDR guys.

Suspicious that this thread got jacked by bots selling very expensive repair kits. I had good luck (on a Civic) with the $20 Permatex version from Autozone (link is above). Wans't 'M2 owner perfect' but if you don't know where it was you wont notice it.
