I Was Quoted Complete Replacement Of Front Brakes For $2,569
Hi Guys,
I live in Los Angeles and I brought my 2019 M2 Comp to the dealer for a routine oil change and I was informed that I needed a complete replacement of my front brakes and that it would cost $2,569. Two questions: 1. Is this an accurate estimate for this work? 2. Does anyone know a reputable independent shop in SOCAL that could do the job? Thanks, Gene

It's probably accurate for a BMW dealer.
List price on genuine BMW (2NH) rotors/pads is around $1500 ($500 cheaper online at getbmwparts). Then $1000 for labor (which is still really high) -- not sure labor rates in LA, but guessing $250/hour, brakes don't take 4 hours (not sure "book" time). |

dealer price so not surprised. like mentioned probably book price + msrp for the parts. I would definitely look into an indie but it will probably still be expensive however bringing your own parts would save you some coin.

Brakes are generally an easy thing to do and could be done for easily half that amount. You could do it with a jack and some stands or rent a lift which I’m sure is feasible in LA. I rent lifts in Seattle for about $50 per hour and it includes all kinds of tools.
A few YouTube videos and a willingness to get dirty will save you at least $1000. |

not sure how many miles you have on the rotors but some people are hard on them, and pads. I would look into FCP euro, get some DS2500 pads and get some OEM rotors form them and then when you wear em out, send em back, back a new set and get a refund for the ones you sent back. Basically worth it if you do this 1 time, not worth it if you not keeping the car for a bit since they are usually a bit more expensive at fcp euro.
As far as DIY, I was going to suggest it but not everyone wants to do it themselves for a variety of reasons. Yes its easy but you also need a few tools and if you already don't have a jack, jack stands and some tools (E bits if I remember correctly for the calipers, torque wrench, ect) then its a bit more of an investment (of course it would pay itself back just basically doing it the first time and now you have tools. |

You don't mention the mileage on your 2019 M2C. Keep in mind BMW dealers always recommend new rotors with pads, even when new rotors are not needed.
You (or the independent shop you find) should be able to measure and see how much life is less on the rotors with a Brake Disc Rotor Gauge Caliper (https://www.amazon.com/VINCA-DRGA-06...dp/B0757HR4C4/) For example, my dealer recommended full front brakes on my X3 with 25K miles and the front rotors were only 0.4mm used (24mm new, minimum thickness 22.4mm), so I just put on new pads. |

Nice -- my dealer has never provided me rotor measurements.
I have no problem running front pads at 4mm for a while (at least until sensor trips), but I wouldn't be comfortable running rotors below the minimum thickness. Good luck. |

I found an independent shop that will replace the front brakes and rotors for $1,675.00

Yeah, dealerships have gotten even more insane. Had my X3 M40 in recently (35k miles) and they said "pads at 4m, recommend replacement" and they never sent me an itemized estimate, the day I picked it up they handed me the estimate and it was maybe 1 sentence and $2,9xx. Bought parts online (eEuroParts/FCP Euro) and OE/OEM (Brembo, Zimmerman, etc) was under $1k and 2.5 hours labor at trusted indy, needless to say well under half of dealer. I have just grown to hate not just their pricing but lack of transparency and honesty.
