Auto start stop is inconsistent?

So sometimes engine auto start stop works fine i.e. as it should, come to a stop and engine goes off until clutch is next depressed and it is restarted.

However this is only about 25-30% of the time and I can't work out why.

I know th engine has to be a bit warm before auto start stop works and am having the issue even when the engine is fully warm.

On the cluster display it often has autostart/stop symbol crossed out.

The ONLY thing I can think of is it does this more since having the ghost immobiliser fitted?

Any ideas?

I was under the impression that if the car thinks the battery voltage is a little low it disables Stop/Start.

Also depends on engine temp, time since last start/stop event, clutch position, duration of last start/stop event etc. When the conditions for start/stop have not been met you will see a crossed out symbol on the dash.

Do you drive in manual mode? It wont run auto start/stop if you are in manual mode.

Who runs auto start/stop anyway? I plan on keeping my M2 a long time and don’t want the wear from auto start/stop.

Not in US, so engine stop/start stays on all the time.
Since I normally drive in Manual mode, it never bothers me.
I do however use the feature by choice when I know the red light phase is long. So it does get used, just rarely.

I turned mine off and it stays off. It is not on all the time.

I see how that can be misinterpreted. When I say not in US. I meant myself.
European builds have auto stop start enabled everytime you start the car. Only way around it is to code it out.

AFAIK, the starter/alternator is really beefed up relative to a normal starter/alternator in cars without ASS.

Constant stoping/starting causes more wear on the engine itself. Not just the starter, etc. And fuel savings are nominal at best if used as designed. It's really just Enviro Marketing BS, and can potentially shorten the lifespan of the engine.

I turned the feature off with the touch of a button, but I'm in the US.

I'm in the U.S. as well, and I, too, either turn it off or manipulate the clutch so the car won't shut off. I also agree that the gas savings are negligible.

That's a North American luxury. In the other parts of the world it auto enables itself everytime you start the car.

These things can cause it to not shut off the engine.
  • Engine not warmed up.
  • Driving mode you're in; e.g. it won't shut off the engine in Sport+ or as others have stated in manual mode.
  • Steering wheel angel off center when coming to a stop or if you turn the steering wheel just after stopping. Seems the car anticipates you're making a turn and so keeps the engine running.
  • When in stop and go traffic, if you don't pick up enough speed before stopping again it won't shut off the engine.
I'm sure there are other reasons it doesn't shut off the engine, for instance possibly if you're drawing too much power such as having AC on, headlights, heated seats, etc. Personally can't stand it due to its inconsistent behavior. The one time that it would be useful for me is in a drive-thru, but since the wheels are usually turned it almost never shuts off the engine. Have it coded off so even if it was turned on during the last drive it's off next time I start the car.

I actually use the feature to give me an indication of the status of the engine / battery. I know if I go out of town for a week, Auto Start-Stop will not activate again for about another week of commuting.

If you have something pulling power from the battery when the car is off, such as a dash cam or similar, you'll almost never see Auto Start-Stop activate.

It did start stop flawlessly today. My commute however is extremely short 10min in traffic 5-6mins in no traffic. I basically get to work and engine has just got up to 'OK' temp but not fully warmed up.

I agree it makes me think the engine and associated parts will wear more quickly with minimal fuel savings, if I ever get the car coded might be tempted to code it off.

Just wondered why it was inconsistent.

Use Bimmercode, or E-SYS to code it out completely

is...annoying. Turn it off. You don't need bimmercode to turn it off completely. If you just hit the button it won't come back on until you re-hit it (which i have done a couple times by accident tbf)

Only in the US; European models switch on again every time you start the car.

Yeh the car resets each time. Worked fine again today.

At least the car isn't broken!
