Phone Mount Recommendations?

What's everyone using in their cars for phone mounts?

I've been researching this for a while and found the vent-mounted ones to be a mixed bag, where some can scratch/damage the vents; for the suction-mounted ones, quite a few of them are gigantic and way too big, and often have residue issues.

From my post in the wireless charger thread...

https://www.ipitaka.com/collections/...irelesscharger

I use the CD slot model, but they have suction cup and vent options as well. Works great, fast charges wirelessly.

Message me if you want a discount link.

I use one of these on my M2C.

It works alright, the good thing is the it mount tightly behind the panel. Although the screw may dig, you don't noticed it due to how it clamps in behind the vents.

I do wish the magnet was a bit stronger. I have had my phone fly off the magnet once on an emergency brake.

So your mileage may vary.

When needed I use the Airframe. https://www.kenu.com

The people damaging their vents are trying to rotate the mount while in the vent and expecting the vent not to break.

But normally I put the phone in the charger and use CarPlay which stops me from unnecessarily playing with the phone while driving.

This works well. I placed the magnetic plate on the inside of the phone's case, instead of on the phone itself. No problems.

Dude, that thing looks fantastic. I wonder if a stronger magnet could be fitted?

Kuda mount base plus proclip. Best option in my opinion.

That looks interesting. Can you explain or show where the screw goes? Does it damage the vent?

Yeah, I'm going to search of other product's magnet mount and see if I can retrofit it onto this when I have free time.

The plate to the vent is very secure. No issues there.
The plate contains holding the metal ball is very secure. No issues there.
There's the adapter piece that goes in between the metal ball and the phone's back plate. I find that the magnetic force is not quite strong enough there and it can sometime cause the phone to pivot about.
Lastly is the adapter piece to the phone's back black, I find it a bit too weak.

So yeah, I'm going to look for other better quality products and replace the from the metal ball or the adapter piece onwards and try and retrofit something better.

If you look close you can see that they screw inwards. I imagine if there was any damage inside the vent it wouldn't be visible. Very elegant solution IMO, just wondering about the magnet strength. Of course, I only have a 6, so it might be fine.

I use the WeatherTech "cupfone" it's a really good solution if you don't mind using one of your cup holders. it's adjustable to fit any cup holder size or any phone size. I found it really nice because the magnet ones i've used in the past can sometimes block the vent, or the idrive. This has been a great solution for me for the past year!

Found one of these a while ago and am very happy with it. Paid more for it but have since found it on ebay for like 25 bucks.

Could you post some pics? I'm interested to see how it fits in an M2.

For sure! here are 2 pictures of it. It comes with 4 different base sizes and you can take them off as needed. I took 2 sizes off and it fits really nice and snug in the cup holder.

A friend of mine has been using the WeatherTech cupholder mount, which is adjustable to fit into just about any size cupholder, and he loves it. I think I will probably pick one up myself as I'm against putting a phone holder on a vent, and don't stash the phone away on the wireless charger in the center console very often.

Currently using this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like it a lot, even though it blocks a vent and some buttons.

It's been mentioned once already, but Kuda base + Proclip is IMO the best. Click for the fullsized / original source link where you can pick higher resolution to zoom in...

Is the installation in this pretty straightforward?

Here are the Kuda base install instructions. (this is for LCI-style interior, 2018+)
You have to pull off the carbon fiber / vent trim first, pry tool + yank. That then allows you to pull off the shiny black plastic trim (there are two screws on it, I think torx), then you pry / yank. One "leg" of the Kuda base is screwed straight into plastic (hidden behind trim, like supporting framework plastic that nobody will ever see) with a self-tapping screw. I can't remember if the button panel itself had to be unscrewed to do this, I don't think so. If it does, that's just a few more torx screws.

The other screw is behind the glove box door. You open the box, line up the other "leg" from the Kuda base piece, and drive the screw into plastic when everything fits how you like. So yeah, there will be one little screw hole visible inside the glove box if I ever take it out... didn't bother me much given how nice it looks when it's installed. You could probably even get away with it on a lease since I doubt anybody would go looking for that hole in the glove box.

The Proclip just screws into the Kuda base with its own self tapping screws. The Kuda base is just factory-looking leather wrapped over fiberglass and plastic.

I actually have a Proclip "quick release" piece attached to the Kuda base, so when/if I change phones and need a different phone holder, I can simply swap that portion out without needing to unscrew anything (I was worried about longterm longevity of the fiberglass and leather on the Kuda base if I had to add/remove screws a lot). Any of the Proclip phone holders that use a "swivel base" just slide right into that quick release and lock in.

My sole complaint is that passengers (my wife) have a bit of a hard time reaching the heated seat button, although some of that is also the charging cable coming out of the bottom of the dock. I have the quick detach portion mounted about as high up on the Kuda base as it could go. I could possibly rig up something to raise the phone higher using other Proclip parts, but it doesn't affect me at all so I just let my wife live with it.

I used the kuda in my F80 (with added Scosche magnet) and it worked great.

Decided a different route with the M2c, brodit proclip with 3d printed mount attached (thanks Megator)

I used that exact proclip base mount in the past, but I don't like how it partially blocks the one vent and I also don't like how it kinda slides around a bit. It's not completely terrible though.
