Wow, please update us on progress as to how you do this. My tuner was a bit loath to do this as he said a lot of other functions on the car rely on the original DME to function correctly. If this does work I'm in

They probably just got an old m2c DME and programmed it to the car. That works no problem.

It doesn't quite work, even if you have the software to "virginise" the old DME.

The moment you connect the old DME to the car which had the "locked" DME you will understand what I mean.

Yeah I was referring to this post which seems more involved.
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=27024806

however you noted later that the poster here said he went and got a JB4 and you wanted to know what the story was with that. I don't know if he ever got back to you?

He never responded mate. But why you would go to a JB4 after all that success beats me.

The DME and certain modules are unique to each other apparently. When a dealer orders a new DME from the factory it is assigned to that chassis number, not sure what/why/how?!

I know of two tuners in the UK who have "virginised" DME's to try and retro fit them to M2C's with the new Bosch software DME's without success.

On a good note, it seems a software tuner has had success regarding a "bench unlock". I'm waiting on more news

Interesting. Let us know. For now there's two M2C's -

Three, I think?

2018-sometime in late 2019/early 2020 M2C: Flashable via OBD-II port
Sometime in late 2019/early 2020 - mid 2020: Bench-flashable
Mid 2020-present: Locked

At least that's how I read things?

My M2C (Feb 2020 build) was bench-flashed by Carbahn but I couldn't use their optional tablet to go to/from the original OEM flash that the earlier cars could use with their OBD ports.

Could be wrong?

You are correct mate. Some early cars in July 2020 have been mapped but most from June/July are locked with Bosch's new DME software.

I should have never sold my 2018 M2Comp :

What is quickest and easiest way to determine which ecu your car has? My build date is July 2020 so borderline...

Take the ECU out and check the production date stamped on it. It's literally the only way... but it's not quick and not 'easy' unfortunately.

aside from taking it somewhere, I don't have a good answer for you... but if you discover that you're one of the unlucky ones, please post back and let us know.

so far the earliest I've seen confirm they have the new ECU is August 2020.

Hook up ISTA, select the DME to "call up ecu functions" and it'll tell you its production date and programming date.

My DME's production date was July 5th 2020. I've heard if it was produced June 2020 or before it can be bench unlocked. Just missed the cutoff...

Different drivers though. The DME unlock is merely an inconvenience which can be 'cracked' with a bench unlock. The new Bosch DME stuff is an outright block to any ECU tuning. Considering this change will affect BMW, Mini, Toyotas and other brands that use the same Bosch DME it has a huge effect on the aftermarket industry. Also consider that the effect of such a block will increase exponentially as newer models are released. There is a big driver and a lot of money behind ensuring this gets broken. But, we'll see.

I heard somewhere that Bosch had an unlock warranty in place. It gets cracked, they are in contractual hot water.
With this in place I wouldn't bet on it being cracked any time soon.
You'd be better off installing a second ECU piggyback like they used to do back in the day before OE ECU cracking. All the engine function is taken care of by the secondary ECU, but primary ECU still thinks it's in control.

From what I now gather it is a change at the hardware level. So physical modification to the ECU would be required. FWIW we are seeing this in all sectors right now--think of Apple's T2 chip. I definitely think this could be the end of the tuning industry, at least insofar as the ability to quickly and easily upload tunes, change maps, etc. from an end user perspective without removing the DME. I do think the trickle down effect is significant, since this won't just affect software tuning companies. Who's going to buy DPs or other bolt ons without being able to properly tune the ECU?

Call Carbahn and ask. One of their tech guys can check via your VIN. I have an 8/20 build and they confirmed that I have the hard lock.

All they're checking is the production date of the car. VIN checking does nothing to check the ECU production date. That information is not recorded nor is it associated with the VIN. You could have a car produced after 06/2020 and have an older or newer ECU. Car production date doesn't help; only ECU production date. The EC production date is also not recorded on any software. To get ECU production date, you have to remove the ECU and check the product date sticker.

Or just query the DME via ISTA like I said above. There's no need to remove the DME.
