In all seriousness the M2 isn't as bad as BMWs of old. For those my wife used two hands. It's probably her best bet.

I do believe it gets softer over time. A few months back I accidentally grabbed reverse at a light. Nearly backed into the person behind me.
I do agree, wish there was some sort of lockout ring or similar. |

When I was new to the car I nearly reversed into a truck behind me at the lights as I went to move off!
Momentum/inertia is your friend, though I can see what you mean it is a weird motion using weird small muscles that are otherwise happy chilling day to day hehe |

I once drove my stock 350Z back to back with a friend's nearly identical car (one year off) with the only real difference being that he'd installed a ridiculously tall bubble shift knob.
I was shocked by how different it felt. Way less effort but also quite a bit sloppier. I think you should explore this option with her. |

It's not about strength but about the placement. Palm the shifter and push it sideways, not up or down. Once it's reached it's max location being pushed to the side give it some force and keep it in the same direction. Maybe it's a confidence thing? Don't be afraid to give it some muscle.
Hope this helps. I feel like if you're pushing it towards the wrong direction or uncertain it'll throw you off

This was my first BMW. We picked it up, pulled into a highway service station and parked up against a wall, went to leave and i spent an embarrassing 3 minutes trying to find reverse. I had to open the glovebox.
The user manual describes it as a "dynamic movement" or something. I thought that was ridiculous, but that's really what it is. It's not strength or force but it does require a certain amount of velocity directly sideways to get the lever across. |
