I’m dropping it. For those who are flaking did you do the curing process? I hear if you skip that it will flake. I’m also throwing down primer on this thing. I’ve seen vht properly applied on headers and they never flaked.

I don't have the can here with me, it was from an autoparts shop specifically for exhaust manifolds upto 600c. Maybe it's not a great quality one, or maybe I needed to prep the exhaust first (I did nothing other than make sure the surface was dry).
The paint is holding up fine on the sides and bottom, it's just small areas flake off around the central area. I'll try a different brand, probably from Amazon if it continues. |

There's no such thing as black steel, only steel that has not been galvanized which has the dark iron oxide layer that forms over time; but these mufflers must be galvanized for protection.

Did you prep the surface before spraying? Also noticed you didn't take the tips off and paint the small area behind them.

No I I didn’t do any prep other than make sure it was dry. I’m lazy! I left the areas above the pipes, as I didn’t want to risk over spraying the pipes. Plus the bit that bothers me most is the muffler hanging below the pipes. It still looks 90% fine, but there’s always a new small area that is about to flake off.

I painted the muffler probably something like 2 months ago and haven't had any flaking whatsoever, nor any need to re-apply. I think I read in a previous post that someone used a paint rated up to 600C or something like that? In my own case, I used the pictured paint, and it's rated at 703-1093C. Maybe that's why some others may be experiencing flaking? Hope this helps! |

Surface contaminants like oil, tar, etc. will cause poor adhesion. IPA wipe down should be a good enough prep before spraying. Last I recall searching for high heat primer was difficult to find, honestly don't think its necessary if the muffler is galvanized as that has texture. If the exhaust is stainless then a red scuffing pad followed by IPA wipe down should work.
