Why is this annoying?

People who could afford the BMW might test-drive the Hyundai to see. Then the truth will come out, whichever way it ends up.

People who couldn't afford the BMW and went with the Hyundai...well, they wouldn't have bought a BMW anyway.

LOL

I think it's admirable they are making a $40K car that they are willing to compare to $80K cars, but I'll believe it when I see it.

All aluminum V8, RWD, 375HP/375TQ (these are early numbers I saw)... sounds like they have gone about this the right way. But I'll defer my judgment until the car has been tested. My guess is that they aren't going to quite hit the mark they're suggesting, but that they'll set a new standard for value with this car. Too bad for Hyundai that it comes out at the same time as we have record gas prices.

I wouldn't buy one, but they're not really marketing to BMW drivers. They are marketing to people who think BMW drivers overpay for their cars.

+1

I'm not saying I'd run out and buy one based on a commercial, but what's the harm in taking a test drive? Best thing that happens is that the commercial is true, and the Genesis is a dream to drive through the twisties. Worst thing that happens is you waste half an hour of your life, and you have a basis to provide an informed review of the product. No biggie.

I donno... Hyundai is becoming a better and better brand... with a 10-year warranty and a new vehicle that looks fabulous (except only for the fact that parts are clearly taken from other leading manufacturers)... AND the fact that it can outperform other vehicles in its class (Oct R&T) says a lot.

Don't get too caught up in names or stereotypes--Volvo has always been considered interchangeable with "safety" but really, the majority of vehicles these days are very very safe.

Btw, has anyone seen the HKS Hyundai Genesis Coupe?

Many of these sentiments were shared when Lexus was the new kid on the block. Now, many BMW/Benz owners seriously consider a Lexus when purchasing a car. Hyndai may not be on par with Lexus quite yet, but its just a matter of time given their value, warranty, and new designs.....

Just my 2 cents...

As Skim7x pointed out, it's not japanese but korean. I would take anything made in Japan (or Korea for that matter) over anything made where you come from. Way to reinforce people's opinions about the south.

Hyundai has pretty much stated it borrowed design cues from the Merc, BMW, and Lexus. They did an excellent job of giving the Germans a run for their money becaues if you replaced the H badge with an "L" I doubt any of you would be able to tell the difference.

The best thing to come of this is either BMW drops its price accordingly or makes their cars better. Win-win.

Everyone's being too sensitive. These cars are not in the same market space.

It's like those fake Rolex watches or Louis Vitton bags you can buy for $30. People that are on the market for a real Rolex won't look at the fake and say "I'll take that instead". Similarly, those that buy the fake cannot afford, or choose not to afford the real thing.

It's the same here. There may be a small number of price sensitive customers that will consider the Hyundai as good as a 5-series, but that's a different market from those who want a 5-series.

btw - the guage cluster is a rip-off of Audi, not BMW.

wow...some of the ignorance and brand snobbiness in the this thread make me sick. Altho I'm happy to see that a MAJORITY of the members here are a little more open minded. Hyundai has been turning things around lately, and you can't hate them for that.

So what if they made a comparison to BMW? It should be a compliment, since they use BMW as a benchmark. I never lose sight of the fact that I am FORTUNATE to be able to drive a BMW (altho it keeps me broke). Some of you said you would rather walk, than drive a Hyundai??? I hope some day you realize how blessed you are driving around a BMW while raising your noses at other "common folk" brands.

back on topic...i personally don't like the looks of the genesis, but am interested to see where this car takes them.

+1 I think Hyundai is improving their lineup very nicely. You really cannot hate on them, like another member said because they compare it to a BMW only compliments the BMW. I kinda like their new line, before hyundai used to make some of the ugliest cars. But now their are a few I wouldn't mind driving if I had to pick one.

I read a "first drive" article on the Genesis compared to the 550. Basically it said the car had the right "numbers" and was a good value. But in terms of feel, response, driver communication, and all those things that BMW does so right, it wasn't even close. Hyundai is going after Lexus. And for anyone who thinks BMW will lower their prices because Hyundai now has the Genesis, keep dreaming.

Just remember - the Japanese in the 70's where the crap import cars that everone said they wouldn't buy - the Korean's are catching on fast and in 10 or 15 years will be like Toyota's and we will all be making fun of the Russian and Indian crap imports!

Car and Driver did an article on the Genesis in this month's issue. They compare it with a 528i (reason was that they're closer in price), Lexus LS460, and a Toyota Avalon.

These cars are for people who value their money. So obviously the people on this site who bought the roundel (or their parents did) are going to hate it.
