Phenomenal trip, F8SEVEN. Thanks for sharing and inspiration!

Does your vehicle have summer or all season tires? I always wanted to take a similar tip but the summer tires on my vehicle allow scheduling only during the summer.

Yeah this is a phenomenal trip. I am from NE South Dakota and have family in North Dakota. Fun fact, my best friend's wife is from Bowman, ND (they live in Phoenix now). They got married there and I was in the wedding. Remember that quaint little town. Some beautiful roads and scenery in the Dakota's. I picked up an E46 M3 from Canada and stored in ND temporarily, but I specifically thinking about that windshield time driving back the 8 hours to my hometown and thinking how peaceful and relaxing the drive was and how amazing it is to see for miles down the road and have absolutely nothing around you.

Well done! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, so I was wondering how long it'd take for this road trip to make the homepage...didn't expect 4 months!

When seeing your pictures featuring fluffy clouds - Rickie Lee Jones on the skies in the South West:
"Q: What were the skies like when you were young?
A: They went on forever and they, when I, we lived in Arizona
And the skies always had little fluffy clouds in them and, er.
They were long and clear and
There were lots of stars at night
And, er, when it would rain it would all turn, it, they were beautiful
The most beautiful skies, as a matter of fact
Uh, the sunsets were
Purple and red and yellow and on fire
And the clouds would catch the colors everywhere
That's unique/neat, 'cause I used to look at them all the time when I was little
You don't see that
You might still see that in the desert
Q: The skies in the South West are spectacular
A: Yeah"

The landscape makes the sky and the sky makes the landscape. The American West and Southwest have both in supplies not available anywhere I've been...and that's a decent few places.

Idk if I will get to experience a trip like this in my M2, but what great inspiration it is to read about aiming for two lane roads and the such. The Mountain West of the USA is amazing.
I work for a bank! 11 federal holidays, several floaters, 4 weeks vacation and I buy a week pretax on top of that. I could probably make more money elsewhere. I can't make more life though. At least not more of my own.

Nothing like the pops and bangs coming out the back of an M2C to break up the peaceful morning serenity of Yellowstone's Lamar Valley.

Yes...I couldn't stay, but I drove through the morning of 4th of July...looked like the place for a proper 4th of July!

Summers...the stock tires. This trip was actually in the first week of July.

Thanks! Sadly, I never quite made it to Bowman..but Eastern Montana and Western ND were indeed incredibly beautiful!

Awesome trip! Thanks for sharing. You found an incredible number of backroads to explore.

Your writeup hints a partner was along for the trip. Kudos to them for going along for the ride. Not every passenger loves a winding back road.

You may have inspired me to take a road trip!

Thanks! Actually, nope. Was just me! If there was reference to "we," that's just Ilse, the car, or me assuming the viewer is there in real time.

Awesome trip and write up! This is such a rare and fabulous color for an M2. I've only seen 3 of them in Oregon. It looks even better in person than in pictures.

In between Ouray and Montrose there is a small place called Ridgway. Right off 550, look for a place called Cafe Ridgway a La Mode. Some of the absolute BEST ice cream I have ever had. They have this flavor called Bunny Tracks, out of this world.

Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to post your adventure. It makes a flat lander like myself cry tears of joy to see a M2 on roads like that being used to it’s full extent.

Over two dozen passes, lots of high altitude driving and lots of high-speed cruising means I’m pretty impressed with this no less. Gets mad looks from all kinds of people of all ages. It’s just likeable.

As for the drive…incredible. I love doing road trips, especially ones like this where I spend the vast majority off of the interstates. The west is just so incredible and dramatic, no wonder people come from all over the world to do road trips here. That said, what most people don't do are road trips in fun cars. You could cruise the interstate in an SUV, stopping at every nice hotel, you can camp out the back of your Subaru, you can clean out your own toilet in a dreadfully slow RV as you watch semis blast by you, you can get sick literally swallowing bugs as your ass goes numb on a bike, or you could hit the backroads in a phenomenal machine, throwing caution to the wind and trying to forget you have no spare and nobody to service your car within 500 miles. There's only one way to do it!

As for the roads...I think the MDH takes it!

Great road trip and summary - thanks for sharing such an incredible trip! This makes me miss my road trips with our group (https://raddrives.com/category/road-tours/) so much! Could not agree more on doing road trips in fun cars off the interstates! Hope we can start up our road trips again next year.

You should go for it! In fact, not to shamelessly self-promote my posts, but if ya'll look at my sig, it's loaded with the road trips that actually were good enough to make the sig. The return from PCD in the M2, the M4 2 week cross country (and back) trip and my 230i ED about 5 years back. I was raised in a road trip family and I am a firm believer that the only way to properly see anyplace is to get in the car and go. Some of my favorite road trips actually never got posted because they weren't in BMWs!
