Engine Overheated

So I just did my break in service a few days ago, before that never beat on the car too hard but have been driving it aggressively.

Was driving home tonight (car was warmed up) and decided to finally go through a few gears to the redline.. went first second and into third and a yellow popup came up saying the engine is over heating and I need to let it cool..

I immediately let go off the accelerator and moments later a red popup comes saying the engine is overheated and I need to pull over and shut the car off. So i am slowing down and suddenly all the messages are gone. I check the control and all systems are OK / oil temp is fine.. Should I go to the dealer or was this some sort of glitch?

Anyone ever experience this issue?

I’d have BMW tow it to the dealer. It shouldn’t get hot just from aggressive street driving, and overheating the engine is not something you want to gamble with.

Yeah, I'm not sure.. I drove it home.. All the lights went off / I checked temps and they were all fine. Extremely weird and I did not even turn the car off.

I guess I'll give the dealer a call tmr..

Minimum call dealer and check to make sure the oil and coolant levels are full.

I agree with these guys, especially given that yo are in Vancouver and not is, say, Texas or Arizona. Not like it's blistering hot where you are at. Car should not be behaving that way.

Seems pretty strange. I would definitely contact your dealer.

Yes, call the dealer, its under warranty.

BTW, I've done some spirited driving in 110+ degree weather in AZ, car was fine and oil temps didn't jump nearly as high as they did in my old 997.

Good luck and let us know what you hear.

At the time you received the error notification did you happed to check the actual temp on the dash...cycle to it and see where it was? I know it is oil/water combined temp delta but still.

Could have been a flaky sensor but it needs to be addressed so you do not et stranded.

Dealer here you come

As others have mentioned i would definitely take it in. It's under warranty, take advantage. I drive mine pretty aggressively here in Texas with temps above 100 degrees and something like this has never happened to me. It could have been a small glitch in the matrix and everything was okay but I would take it in anyway just to be sure.

Maybe they didn't put in enough oil ?

Definitely not normal.

Had this happen to me today. 2018 M2 with 4600 miles. I pulled over immediately once I got the red warning and had it towed to the dealership. They said it was a loose ground on the water pump. They're keeping the car and will give it a prolonged test drive tomorrow to be sure temps are good.

Happened to me twice already with normal driving. Coolant temp gauge was on “OK”. Oil and coolant levels were ok as well. Took it into Indy bmw only shop and they pressure tested the system and couldn’t find anything. For those who have had this issue…. What was the solution? Hate having these false alarms.

On the topic of overheating, are events like that logged anywhere accessible? Can esys look for engine or oil temp exceeding a range or anything?

I know I can log data like that via BM3 etc, but I’m curious if it’s logged to the ecu natively.

Just wanted to update everyone. Ended up being a clogged radiator and heater core and bad ground on the water pump. So replaced radiator, WP and Themeostat. Issue is gone!!
