It's sitting on the MAP sensor on the charge pipe. Most likely limits the output of the sensor either at the top end of the signal range or some variable value throughout. Either way, these are generally not considered ideal and can lead to issues.

The car automatically determines appropriate boost level to move an amount of air. When the air density reduces (e.g. at altitude), the car applies more boost. When air density increases (e.g. very cold day) the car will applies less boost (than a warmer day). BMW want theirs turbo cars to produce a consistent amount of power under varying atmospheric conditions. Devices like this exploit the fact that there is a higher, reserved, boost pressure limit built in by the factory programming. The car should stop producing boost past max programmed limits because the ECU is still getting the actual boost reading. So by changing the MAF reading, the boost is effectively raised (to the factory limit) or lowered. Hence "boost controller". Anyway that's my understanding of it. |

Also, I don't think you can get legitimate dyno results on this by doing quick back-to-back runs. You probably have to drive the car for many miles after installation and do several WOT runs, for ECU adaption purposes. Last edited by zenmaster; 01-17-2017 at 08:43 PM.. |

As for the dyno runs, the first run was with the unit on (installed and continually running for about a month). Then we dyno'd with it disconnected. The results should be viable .

Anyway, I am going to run an intercooler with this setup for a while once the heat comes back. Then possibly go to a Bootmod3 setup down the road. Its fast enough now so I just want to dial in what I have. Either way, the DME has acted wonderfully and gives loads of power with no lag all over the place. I absolutely love love this engine. 2nd gear fights for traction. Its funny to be at 2000rpms and instantly have the tires start to shred when you mash it. |

AFAIK, it should only provide a way to make use of the built-in amount of overhead boost. The computer is still reading direct AIT, waste gate duty cycle, A/F etc. You shouldn't get a fault unless something is wrong with the signal, because the ECU programming is designed to compensate for the (viable) MAF signal range indicated.

Waiting to hear back from Fabspeed Motorsport to set up an appointment for install and subsequent dyno runs.

By all accounts, it's the one to have.

Thanks, but we had already talked and I mentioned the deal that I was getting from Mike at Extreme and you told me to go with him. But anyway, I ordered it today. Can't wait to install it and see how this beast opens up!

Sorry for the brain fart, so much stuff going on here on a day-to-day basis. We have to respect our retailers but I'm glad Mike was able to take care of you - he's a great dude!
