Help Me Decide Between M2 Comp and Base 991.2

Hey guys, like the title says I've narrowed it down to these two. Carrera would be a base 2017 991.2 (rear wheel drive). This would be a daily driver in the northeast so will be going for DCT/PDK.

I've driven the 991.2 and liked it but wasn't blown away. Looking to find and drive the M2 in the near future. For what it's worth, I will likely end up putting a tune, intake, downpipe on whichever car I get. Seems like both cars are pretty stout when it comes to mods.

Have others cross-shopped these two? Any thoughts and opinions?

I have . . . and went with the 718 CGTS.

My thoughts/opinion . . . the 991.2 and M2C are completely different cars and only the prospective buyer can determine which suits them better.

Not sure how you narrowed it down to a 991.2 and M2C when you have not even driven a M2C?

I had a 2017 M2 for a year that I traded in for an F150. I then got an E36 M3 to go with the truck, but missed having a sports car with a little more power and tech. A friend was selling his 997.1 and I seriously considered it, but the PPI didn’t turn out great (had engine bore scoring... which you can read about and can affect some 997.2). Would have been a 25k rebuild. He had no idea and car had no symptoms of it. Borescope on PPI showed it. I was disappointed that the purchase didn’t work out so I test drove an M2 competition and loved it. More room in the back for the kids than the 911, felt a lot faster than my OG M2, and didn’t have to worry about warranty issues on a 10 year old car. I ended up with DCT this time (had 6MT in first M2). I love the transmission so far and the car feels so much faster. I’ll also track it some. I still have the E36 M3 with a manual transmission when I feel like rowing my own gears, and to be honest, I prefer the clutch feel in the E36 over my old M2. In the end, both the 997.2 and M2C are great cars... just need to decide what works better for your life and budget.

Nothing else really appeals to me in the price range. I need back seats and like M2's small form factor. Already have a 6spd race car, so really looking for a fun car for the street that I can daily.

Thanks for chiming in. I've looked at 997s but would be going for the 991.2 generation (3.0 turbo).

No matter what car, dont get base. You will always have the second look as you see the same car with the higher trim.
If you compare those two, I would go for m2c

I have never been quoted anywhere near $500 for an oil change on any of my Porsches. My GT3 costs less than half that amount and holds 7 quarts of oil.

So freaking true..

A base to a fully-equipped version is almost like a difference models.

If I can't afford a car with all the options I want, I would just get the cheaper variant.

By Base, I mean a regular Carrera and not an S. It would still have all of the options I want, minus the more powerful engine. Which is fine by me, because I'll most likely throw a tune on it anyway.

Seems like M2 Comp would be more of a livelier/fun car on the road based on what I've read. Hoping to line up a test drive soon.

Definitely try the m2 with mdm and and dct in manual mode with the shift speed set high.

Isn't having a powerful, rear wheel drive vehicle as your daily in the northeast kind of a bad idea? That Porsche or M2 is going to be difficult at best in the winter. Wouldn't it make more sense to find an AWD vehicle for daily duty in areas with snowy winters and very rainy falls? I believe Porsche does make some AWD vehicles.. As far as the BMW goes, a M240i xdrive might do quite a bit better where you live. I'm not a fan of my m2 in the rain and I would not even want to test it in the snow. My m2 is my daily, but it shares duty with a 2008 A4 quatro for bad weather.

Exactly!

Something like an Audi RS 3

I am talking a bit out of my ass because I need something other than my 718 CGTS for snow days in the Midwest and about to pull trigger on an M2C (with some aftermarket snow tires). . . BUT I did give the RS 3 a test run. Honestly, it's a nice ride and superior to M2C for purposes intended. Just not what I want.

My more reasonable half (wife) asked me to reconsider, and insists I drive the RS 3 one more time over holidays before pulling trigger on M2C. Of course I will . . . end up getting the M2C

Ah.. I miss read it. If you can afford the 991.2 and don’t need a back seat, I’d go 911.

Used 991.2 stock hardware with a tune would be fun.

Edit: Due to the ability to tune this platform I might go to a well specced base model, but look around because S models can be had for not much more. If tuning is in the cards, the read up on whether PSE will cause issues.

Had a 991.1 911, 2013 base, manual. Now have a 2016 M2. They were both awesome and to me, sort of equivalent in excitement. I found the Porsche much more beautiful, though. You can stare at its rear haunches in your driveway, the forged 20" wheels, the iconic and voluptuous shape. The M2 is certainly nice, but not on the same level aesthetically, for me.

The 2019+ M2C, with its increase in power and braking, would likely be the more exciting car to drive as base 911's can feel a little sedate. However, the tradeoff is the 911 has a better ride, is quieter on the highway, and a nicer interior. The M2 sound system is pure crap too, if thats a factor.

911 service costs can be scary too but, M2 isn't exactly cheap. M2 is much more DIY friendly if that's your thing. The rear-engine placement makes it much more difficult to do anything beyond oil-changes on a 911. I'd never get a Porsche anything out of CPO or some warranty. On the 911, I was quoted $7.5k for a clutch, plugs, coil packs, and full 50k service. Yikes!

If you're financially well off, I'd go for a lightly used 991.2 911 GTS or GT3 or even the latest 992 or GT4/Spyder, they're truly special cars. If you are motivated by value, all Porsche's are a hard argument to get behind and the M2C is a totally thrilling car considering it's price. I'd also keep an eye on the upcoming C8, very hard to overlook the value equation there.

I don't ever see myself owning AWD cars, same goes for trucks, cross-overs, etc. They just suck the fun out of driving. Test drove RS3 and while fast, it was quite boring. Zero drama.

My current ride is a 340i with full bolt-ons (440 at the wheels). Haven't had any issues the past two winters running winter tires. In fact, my car has considerably more traction in the winter than my wife's ES350 on all seasons.

Having owned all of the water-cooled generations of the 911 (except the 992, thankfully), the 997.2 is the sweet spot. I actually just bought another with the funds I had set aside for the M2 CS.

Nice, post up some pics. What's your preference for the 997 over 991
