My painted exhaust is holding up great. I spent the time to sand, clean, sand again, clean the muffler before applying primerand then painting.

Side by side pictures also with buddy's M2c without a painted exhaust. Those that think a painted exhaust has no visual difference need to visit their optometrist ASAP!

Looks better for sure.

I still prefer the looks, sound, tips and weight savings of the MPE, and cost was not an issue for me...so I am happy.

Enjoy!

Definitely the MPE over the stock one. It might be just pictures or an illusion but it seems like the MPE tips hang little lower from the bumper than the standard muffler tips.

I am leaning towards Remus Sport exhaust but just cant justify the cost so I painted mine.

Yeah, I know-- a little bit of a zombie thread, but since I'm researching any/all threads dealing with the M2C while I wait (and wait, and waaaaait) for an Allocation for my build, two questions:

1. Cerakote vs. VHT. Pros? Cons?

2. Why aren't more people pulling off the exhaust and painting it off the car? It would seem to me that would be an easier solution than trying to mask the car, clean/prep while laying on your back, etc?

TIA--

Re: #1, I'm not familiar with Cerakota but I used VHT flameproof a couple weeks after my M2C arrived in August. I've been really impressed with how well that stuff holds up and bonds to the surface with minimal prep. The muffler looks as good as the day I sprayed it. All I did was scuff up the metal with a Scotchbrite pad and then did a thorough clean. I've also used the VHT flameproof on other projects--you can spray an area and it's pretty well cured in an hour.

For #2, I think removing the exhaust would have taken longer than the masking I did. I took my time and spent about 1.5 hours for the entire project, including jacking up the car and waiting a few minutes between coats. Considering I don't have a lift I was also concerned I would scratch up the new paint when reinstalling. But yeah, if I had a lift and someone to help I probably would have removed the muffler. I was actually hoping I'd be unhappy with my paint job so I could justify buying a new exhaust.

I think the idea of polishing it out is kinda neat too.

Mufflers deal with temperatures that range between 300 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to the intensity of heat produced by an engine's emission system, most exhaust systems are built to handle an excess of 1,200 degrees. This product should be more than adequate.
I used this exact product 2 days a go, worked great, I'll let you know in a month how it holds up to a Canadian winter with salt.

VHT is an easy cheap DIY. Cerakote is a whole different ball game intended for small items and it's expensive. And its more of a smoked gloss finish which would draw the eye. The matt finish of VHT is what makes it "invisible" at a glance.

Exhaust off is a 2 man job with a lift. Or at least a major PIA at home.

Agree it's a better job off the car, i did mine when i had an aftermarket exhaust on the car. Before i sold it and put the standard one back on...

I think I'm going to do this next week.

I currently have decat DP's, AA mid pipe and Eisenmann rear box and it's very loud so I'm thinking about switching back to the OEM rear box but thought I'd paint it first.

Got myself plenty of blue masking tape, some polythene sheeting and of course some VHF black paint.

My only question is regarding cleaning the exhaust prior to painting - I have a couple of cans of carb cleaner - will this be good enough?

I cleaned mine with soap and warm water and a pan scouring pad first to get the dirt off and scratch it up a bit. Then dried it.

Then degreased it with alcohol, but carb cleaner would do fine.

Disposable gloves stretched over the tips..

I used VHT to paint mine and snowy+salty roads have taken a toll on the paint. I’ll paint it again as soon as the weather gets better. Or, I can finally pull the trigger on a catback!

I had mine painted when I took delivery. We dropped the unit so a AA Midpipe could be installed. 10K miles on the muffler now looks fine.

I'll see how it holds up at the track when I get out this April

All done! Really pleased with the sound as the downpipes and midpipe still give you a bit of noise!

Dumb question-- did you cut the exhaust, or is that where it separates?

I'm going to do this once my car gets delivered, but I can't quite figure out where the exhaust disconnects on the M2C.

Considering Cerakote just as a slightly more permanent (i.e. harder) solution.

TIA--

Not a dumb question at all, my car is a EU OPF car which has the one piece exhaust system to the downpipe. My other exhaust is an Eisenmann valved system which required cutting of the original pipe to fit (good instructions included). I'm not sure if the exhaust on other (USA) M2Cs are one piece but if they are you will have to spray in situ or cut OR remove the whole system up to the downpipe.

The factory exhaust is one piece all the way from the end of the downpipes at the back of the engine - to the rear muffler.

So it's a 2 man and a ramp job to get the OE exhaust off.

That's..... an interesting way for BMW to build the car.

Huh.

As much as I'd like to paint the exhaust can with high temp/high hardness cerakote as a slightly more elegant solution than using a "rattle-can" on a $60k car-- it looks like the effort required won't match the reward.

VHT it is.

Thanks--

There is no need to take the exhaust off if you want to just paint the visible muffler.

As they say, don't let perfect get in the way of good enough.

I didn't even take off the diffuser. I did remove the tips, taped up the diffuser and carefully sprayed all the visible areas. It's not a big deal or hard...

I did clean it well with a brush, alcohol and made sure it was dry. If it comes off a bit, I'll touch it up... but honestly I don't think it will, the rear muffler is pretty well protected. You need to paint the tips portion though, so I removed them and got knock off carbon tips. That area needs to be black or it stands out.

I can’t fathom rattle canning a new car, but I’m pretty OCD, but still ... you’re going to rattle can a new car? .... and not even remove the exhaust to do it.

I can’t.
