If that is too much, just get a complete engine from a totaled M2c, do the crank hub, then drop it in. Then tune it!
Get the used M2C engine and transfer over the oil pan and sensor from the CS = identical end product.

The S55 BMWNA MSRP for a non-exchange engine is $23,324 and is available discounted for ~$19k.

Right on... If I was coming out of pocket, I would find a low mile used engine and drop er in...

Obviously that’s not the only route forward but this price quote from the dealer shouldn’t be surprising.
No one in the right mind will pay msrp for an engine.

Just get this.

I'm curious about what a rebuild will cost? I agree the carbahn is a great option if you want to increase power, but might be overkill if you don't want it. Value will be toast if BMW doesn't cover it r under warranty.

A fix at bmw would be the only thing that saves any chance at holding resale value. That, or hed have to put 20k miles on whatever a non-bmw shop puts in it before ‘I, as a buyer’ would be comfortable with it.

Personally, I'd get the car out of their possession immediately. Then have the DME scanned by a reputable independent shop. Hell, you could even mail the DME to a reputable shop out of state, if you don't have one nearby. If the data shows that the over rev happened before you took ownership, that's when I'd lawyer up and let your lawyer wipe the floor with the dealership.
So i actually have a guy that works at a independent shop to come out and get the ECM report on wed so ill know more info then.

yeah it only had 13k miles on the car so would have to get it to 13k miles.

It's critical to find out WHEN the over-rev occurred. I find it hard to believe that you over-rev'd the car and didn't realize or don't remember doing it, so that leaves the time period BEFORE you took delivery as to when it happened.

Make sure you get a hard copy of this report and maybe even have the owner of the shop sign it. If it happened before you bought it, I'd march over to the dealer and have a meeting with the GM before hiring a lawyer. If you get the cold shoulder, hire a pit bull lawyer.

There's rev limiter. So, it didn't function?

A money shift can't be prevented by rev limiter as it's instead driven by the current vehicle speed being too high for the gear selected.

I don't know how the ECU will show this. Even a Porsche only shows the rev range, not a timestamp, no?

Not sure if it’s been mentioned already but have you looked into your state’s lemon law?

Actually, I'm not sure, but if he can't prove WHEN it happened, the OP is toast.

Porsche tells the engine age (hours) when it occurred. Not sure about BMW

I had my exhaust flaps unplugged for 5 years now.

When I plugged in ISTA it showed a date stamp when I unplugged the flap from the connector. My guess there should be some kind of timestamp.

I didn't read the entire thread, but can you not go through insurance for this repair? Granted they might total the car out but a money shift really is something they should cover?

Can you over rev this engine (6MT) if, when warming it up and in neutral, you bounce it off redline? Or will rev limited work as intended in this case?
