My next car was meant to be a 2025 M3 CS Touring, keeping my M2 CS DCT as a track car (it was my daily driver from new, 15k miles now and 20x track days). The M2 is no longer my daily, but does 6-7 track days per year. I love it.

An opportunity has come up to buy a 2021 Cayman GT4 PDK with 4k miles in 3 years. It's well-specified and will cost about the same second-hand as the CS Touring is new in Australia. I would use it mainly for track days (it has the clubsport pkg and steel brakes) and I could purchase 4-yr warranty from Porsche.

I'm after some M2 CS owner's thoughts, particularly those that have experienced owning/driving the GT4 on track. I'm after the PDK, manual engagement arguments don't interest me, I own enough MT cars to satisfy that.

So, my conflict is whether to keep my M2 CS and get the CS Touring, or get the Cayman with the M2 possibly becoming surplus to my needs.

I hope I've articulated my dilemma well enough. Appreciate any opinions.

For my mind the only Cayman to justify moving on the CS would be the GT4 RS. Otherwise it kind of feels like you are replacing a one-off rarity with a production car.
But, I don’t really track so that’s not a consideration at all for me. And, it’s a rather larger price differential…..

Perhaps an alternative is to keep the CS, and get the last ICE Macan (GTS) instead of the M3 Touring?

Appreciate the reply, Beenz. The RS at 400k is just not a consideration for me. Amazing as it is, it would mean sacrificing other cars that I love to get into one.

The Macan isn't my style. I like wagons more than SUVs, and the interior space would be inadequate for my needs as a daily.

Quite correct in that the CS is often compared to the GT4, so it is a sideways step in many ways (they're both pretty rare in Australia). But moving to what would be my first Porsche, a gorgeous mid-engined dedicated sports car, is such an appealing prospect.

Hoping someone with track experience in both can chime in and tell me that the GT4 blows the CS out of the water for speed and excitement, make my decision easy for me.

I have a 95B Macan GTS and had the M2 CS and loved them both. I also currently drive a M3 Touring and will be switching out our Macan GTS for a 911 T in 3 weeks when it’s delivered after an 18 mth wait.

My sense is the M3 CS Touring is not going to be a better track car than a 718 GT4 simply because the M3T’s weight and sheer size around track are not going to beat a better packaged and dedicated track rat like a GT4.

If you were after a daily however the M3 Touring will be far better. I can’t bring myself to say a M3 Touring CS will be because it probably won’t have cup holders and I’ll be holding my sides laughing if I ever see one irl.

Finally, I’d take PDK over ZF8 any day, any situation. And the Porsche NA will sound significantly better than the S58. My macan GTS sounds better than the M3 Touring no question.

I'm an on track driving instructor with quite a few years of experience and have spent a good deal of time in a GT4 (manual) and several stock and modified F87s. From the right seat the F87 generally feels more thrilling because you're controlling slip angle a little more with your inputs during the course of any given lap but there's something about the GT4 that just feels proper and blissful like it wants you to chase precision and will reward you with more precision. If you're looking for the occasional grin during a series of push laps as you interact with the car it's the F87, if you're a perfectionist by nature and working toward hitting your marks perfectly with the maximum possible speed is more satisfying it's the GT4.

Thanks for the opinion. I would wait till i can afford gt4 and slowly moving away from f87. Cuz tracking m2 is lot cheaper than gt4 for sure so gt4 will be a garage queen for a while.

If you are going to have a mostly dedicated track car, my suggestion will be to go with the Porsche. Although both are great cars, I think the Porsche GT products beat anything else out there for track use. It will be precise and you will be able to do non stop laps with out issue. They just go and go and go.

I have an M2CS with Team Schirmer kit, so very precise and capable. The car is as fun to drive as my Porsche. However, I have run into minor hiccups at the track. Tank is too small, I can not run the car under 1/2 a tank otherwise I will get fuel starvation issues on fast right handers (know issue). PDK is superior to the DTC for track use and most importantly, the traction control system on the Porsche is significantly better as well.


Ultimately the M2CS is a very special car, but it is a sport sedan, while the GT4 will feel more like a track tool, that being said, the M2CS for certain it will be a more practical and fun car to drive. Either choice will be a fantastic one.

Not sure this helps much but my situation is in the ballpark. I wanted a daily driver, something special, and a track car. Originally was trying to figure out how to do that with just two cars. I cross shopped the GT4 with the CS and ended up buying the CS and my opinion matches the driving instructor explanation above. The CS is expensive to insure for track days etc so I then have gone down the route of starting a track only build of a 981 Cayman S. It's not a GT4, but it's a great base I can have fun "ruining" specifically for track and still spend less and insure less overall. I also ended up with an suv for daily and thankfully have the garage space for doing so and I can then tow the track car.

I ended up buying the GT4 PDK, picking it up in 1 week. My first Porsche, so a little excited. It will be used for fun drives and track work.

The M2 CS is staying in the garage though, and returning to daily duties. It's nice to have choices!

Agreed - epic combo…and the CS is a surprisingly capable daily. Amazing how much space the rear seat has for such a tight package. I was daily driving my M2C but weekend warrior on the CS…and funny thing is, the CS is a much better daily with the adaptive suspension. Game changer vs M2C.

I’ve been lusting for a GT4 RS…that induction sound, holy ****…never thought I’d want something more than a GT3 but I do! One day…for now, look forward to seeing more pics of these two garage mates playing nice together.

My wife loves her 718 GT4! U cant go wrong with it.
But you lost me at automatic.

Lusting for a GT4RS so hard, and contemplated doing a two for one swap but I just can’t let go of the CS so has to be a future addition when finances permit…think it’s the best modern P car for streets…seemingly more thrilling given induction noise vs 3RS for just sprited road / street driving. Just needs an exhaust to unleash the real note of that engine and then perfect IMO. Such a sexy car, and what a beast of a machine…one day!

I do miss the F87 M2 CS, just a fabulous car. It had all the goodies, including CCB.
