Unfortunately not a covered loss on an auto policy. Unless there was an underlying covered event that caused the engine failure like a collision hitting oil pan, or other covered collision or comprehensive event like fire, flood, etc.

I can guarantee you that the original owner of the car miss shifted and over rev the engine.. It happens all the time when people buying cars with high HP.. that’s why if you’re buying a used BMW make sure you get CPO certified and do not buy it from an independent dealership unless you have the car inspected first by a BMW dealer.

You just need to prove that the misshift over rev occurred before you purchase the vehicle.

The lack of detail in this thread leads me to believe we're not hearing the whole story for any number of reasons.

1) OP might not be sure whether or not he over rev'd and be at fault
2) He didn't buy from a BMW dealership
3) He's restricted on sharing any more detail legally

I doubt we'll ever hear the end result of this scenario.

Will not make a difference. Buyer beware just like any other used car. It is also my understanding that at the dealership level, they cannot see the over rev info. That is provided by corporate once the car data has downloaded. Additionally, if this person is currently in talks with BMW, they make you sign a nondisclosure agreement so we won’t hear anything for a while..

If that’s true, that’s moronic. Any dealership can pull the DME report on a Porsche. Why would BMW be different?

I don’t get it though. I bought it from
BMW - it’s my car and therefore my data. Why would BMW even care if I can read MY overrev report?!
I’m not saying you’re wrong, just trying to understand BMW’s logic here.

If the over rev occurred prior to purchase, wouldn’t that show up as an engine issue during the purchase, test drive stage?
Apparently the car was in working condition at the time of the purchase it seems…

Over rev damage can take a while to show up unless it is a catastrophic event that instantly grenades the motor. Many over revs can loosen the crank hub.

26,550 miles on it and what ever oil the bmw dealership uses. It ended up being a BMW malfunction. Cylinder one fuel injector, stuck open and Hydro locked my motor. Bent a rod

Oh I see, I was guessing it was a rod bearing or something. Wow that is bad luck with the injector.

Bubbling this one back up. Could an over rev happen if you rev the engine in neutral and bounce off red line? Curious if this is why/how BMW logged an over rev.

Just wanted to give everyone a update on this whole situation. So it turned out that it might only need the timing fixed he said is about 90% off which is crazy to me. He also said the valves are just fine no bent valves. the 1st shop i took it too told me it needs a new enigine blah blah charging me 20k same for a rebuilt 20k blah blah blah wasnt making sense so i took it to this other shop that seem he knows alot about these cars and he took a look and said hes 95% sure its just the timing and thats why it has no compression we will see.... He checked everything else said its ok as of now but will know more on tuesday but i guess he said the engine is not damaged as the overrev wasnt as bad according to him.

This situation happen because i had it rented out in another state because i was no able to afford the payments and my buddy took it over out there for 6 months and thought i can trust him but he shipped it back the way it is now. That is why i needed proof so i can get some money out of him but we ended up settling for a fair amount.

I did not buy from the bmw dealership but still had full warranty with bmw dealer and extended warranty. it had about 4k on the odemeter when bought.

This is exactly what the 2nd mechanic shop told me is the problem after a 1-2 hour look at it. so im hoping its just that ill know by tuesday.
The first mechanic shop was telling me it needs a new engine etc 20k then rebuild for same price and then he didnt want to give me a invoice kept delaying it seems like he was trying to take me to the cleaners just like bmw dealership was.

Five pages into this thread and NOW you tell us you rented the car out for 6 months to a friend?
The BMW dealership and the place where you bought the car were right all along.
