Was quoted 15 hours by both IND and a shop they recco'd in the GTA. Install cost is closer to $2,000. Part is $1,200 if I remember correctly.

Some folks here claim that BMW will install the carbon roof, which involves very intensive labor, for free if it's installed at the VDC (US delivery port).

You know, because BMW is known for their generosity..

I want some of what they're smoking..

This installation isn't scary to me at all. I can name 3 shops off the top of my head I'd feel confident doing this modification... Port makes 4. My issue is the price. I'd just skip the sunroof and mac the solid steel roof for $0.

The worst part of doing this to your M2 would be dealing with all the jerks saying "I wouldn't have done that to my car."

I believe he was referring to the F87 RKP carbon roof. IND sells has it listed for $1295.

Sometimes the truth is painful to hear. It's just not a very smart decision to be honest.

Those are the same people that "wouldn't bag an M2".

Some of you are acting like this is new. Owners have been installing carbon roofs for years. Goes back to E46 M3 owners installing the CSL roof. E90 M3 owners feeling left out and installed after market carbon roofs. Some F10 M5 owners had carbon roofs installed, even some OG M2 owners. Why is everyone just flipping out now?

I agree but I guess this is the first time for most of us seeing the whole process in detail. I still have no problem with port install but there is no way I would let a 3rd party body shop (let alone a BMW dealer) install the CF roof regardless how experienced they are.

I don't know of any BMW dealer that I've ever dealt with that is capable of doing this type of work let alone have the means to do it. Dealers typically send out cars to local body shops that they have a partnership with for work like this.

I still don't get BMW's rational behind any of this. I see things all the time that require tearing a car apart to upgrade it with aftermarket parts. It's the first time I've seen the same offered directly from a car manufacturer which makes no sense. You make the car, you sell the CF roof, so you should install it directly at the factory instead of tearing apart a new car, adding extra hours of work and BS to get this done after the fact. For a company that's all about efficiency this is the most idiotic and counter intuitive thing I've ever seen them do.

When IND introduced the RKP carbon roof in 2016, the thread made front page. 6 pages long not one reaction about installing a carbon roof will ruin the car. The entire thread was positive. Not sure what changed all of sudden. I’d have no problem doing port install, third party I would ship car to IND. IND work is second to none.

Please don't profess your opinion like it's an objective fact.

What facts can you present that would counter my opinion? Do you have logical arguments in favor or the roof swap?

My point is you're stating your opinion as an objective fact. I have already shared my opinion and didn't feel the need to misrepresent it as a fact.

I imagine it was the video in this thread. The end result is very positive aesthetically. Seeing a new car being opened up like a tin can with an air chisel isn't.

Maybe because it’s the manufacturer offering the roof, but in an aftermarket install? It’s definitely a good question. Just seems strange to me the way they’ve (BMW) decided to go about it.

I'd guess it came down to relatively low cost of production due to the utilization of the existing carbon parts program, combined with the sales division believing they can sell them. It's probably just that simple. I'd guess +50% of buyers probably won't even know the roof was/is retrofitted when they purchase their car.

It would be really interesting to learn how many of all the M Performance parts are sold; and if they were over-the-counter sales, or installed before delivery.

Most normal people (meaning those who are not on these forums or die hard enthusiast) won't know the difference. You shouldn't let what other people say bother you (Easier said than done, I know). If it's something you want, have the money, and can find a good body shop to do it, I see nothing wrong with it.

If I see someone with a CF roof in the future. I would just want to know what they thought of it, how it was holding up, and if there were any issues. Hopefully people who are truly interested in getting it done can provide help and feedback for others

I personally would rather BMW just did it at the factory, but I'm also not that into carbon roofs. It looks cool, but I'd rather have a moon-roof, which I know a lot of people don't want on these types of cars.
