M2C manual 1st gear issues
Hey everyone! I'm a brand new owner of a m2c 6mt here in canada and got a question. I'm halfway passed the break in period and one thing got me worried, sometimes the the transmission refuses to go into first gear from neutral. Like it happens about 1 to 3 times a week, usually happens at a red light I go into neutral and when im ready i clutch all the way try to pop into first but something is blocking it, most of the time if i pop into 2nd and then ill be able to go into first. However one time it refused to go into first no matter what i did
i even restarted the car ended up having to launch in 2nd gear held up traffic which was embarrassing. Little history I'm by no means a pro racer but having driven many manual cars before mr2 turbo/s2000 never encountered this issue before so i doubt its my driving abilities. Should I be worried? its brand new car so warranty will cover everything, unless they say I mishifted and grinded the gears which I know I did not do. The m2c also had 127 km when I purchased it so it did get test driven or whatever for 37km cause i think new cars usually have 90km on odometer. Hopefully someone can ease my worries! thanks Last edited by nnj3jnn; 03-05-2019 at 02:14 PM.. |

No problems of any sort like that here.
Definitely have it looked at. Couple of possibilities are the clutch is not fully disengaging (slightly dragging with pedal fully depressed), and it may need to be bled (air bled out of hydraulic line) or it's got mechanical issues. Another is the 1st gear synchro is not well. My car had 9 miles on it when I bought it, and since I had given up my allocation locally to purchase it out of state back in September, I'm pretty sure that dealer gave someone one test drive in it (I bought it the 2nd day the dealer had it).

I have had this happen to me once in a while on my previous M235i and on my current M2c. Even my friend with an F80 M3 reports the same issue.
My F80 friend says going to 2nd and back to 1st works for him. As for myself, double pumping the clutch always seems to open up 1st again. 3 manual transmissions all exhibiting the same quirk, I just assumed it was normal at that point. But I am curious as to why it happens. |

For me it's a BMW thing, because I have the M2C in 6MT and also an E90 M3 in 6MT and they both sometimes don't want to get into 1st, or 3rd.

Bet you’ll get a lot more responses/interest in the specific topic if you edit the title to something like “M2C Manual 1st gear problems”
We can really see how many people are having the same deal |

I haven't had a problem going into any gear. One thing that I've noticed is that after almost 5k miles the shifting is just getting better and better.
Try letting the clutch out in neutral and gunning the engine a bit and then press the clutch all the way to the floor and gingerly shift into first. If it doesn't want to go in then I would have it checked out. That is not normal. |

Thanks for all the replies, I was going go wait until the 2k km service but i think ill just bring it in now so they can look at it and if it happens again they can look again during the 2k km service. The regularity of it happening atm is kinda unacceptable on a brand new car to me. Ill let everyone know what the dealership says!

It's normal for a MT - take it back into 2nd then forward into 1st, or re-engage the clutch and try again.
Basically the cogs aren't lined up, so won't engage. |

My previous 335 and my wife's 328 exhibited this behavior. Going to 2nd and back to 1st has always cured the issue on the first attempt for us. I have not yet had this issue on my M2C.

It's normal. All MTs can do this from time to time.

Do you know if the transmission is still cold? On both of my Miatas (ND and NC) that I've owned the same thing happens until the transmission oil warms up. First gear gets really hard to get into after stopping and I need to get into 2nd then first. However, after the transmission oil warms up, it becomes much smoother.
I've never driven a BMW manual so I'm not sure if it's relevant though. |

but a brand new car to me is unacceptable unless its because its not broken in and the problem goes away. I've had the car for less than a month and its happend twice a week seems excessive. |
