Hated it at first, but have gotten used to it. Especially things like maps/texting/music.
I stopped using iDrive navi the moment it didn't know about a 2 year old change in freeway onramp location by my house. Deal breaker on a 2017 car for me. Maps will show you suggestions based on where it thinks you're going; you can mute voice directions, which is nice sometimes; and your Safari searches show up as suggested locations. Interface requires scrolling around options, and it would have been nice to have integrated the touchpad controls so you can swipe vs. scroll around. And yes, Spotify is buggy as hell starting up. Some of these are annoyances, but not enough to detract from its usefulness. |

It's interesting to hear various people's opinions regarding Carplay. I didn't go ahead and order it as I''m rarely in a situation where I could foresee benefitting from it.
I do find the repeated criticism of those opinions rather juvenile and tiresome. It's disappointing to read the attitudes of some on here, and how that might reflect on the broader BMW/M community.

This seems like an appropriate video just about now.
I find Siri on my phone to be occasionally useful, very rarely very useful, and frequently very frustrating and maddening. There's certainly a lot of room for improvement. |

It is not perfect or essential at the moment, but I recommend it for the future. The enthusiast who had a Honda Civic in school with CarPlay and now wants a used M car will definitely appreciate it. The version in the 2017's is one the first of the wireless versions which makes does make it more seamless. Most importantly, CarPlay will be the only part of the electronic interface that will be updated over time -- as mentioned, there is already an update with 10.3. Also remember that BMW's iDrive system has been developed extensively over time and is quite good -- in other vehicles, CarPlay is better than the factory system. |

I choose Appleplay because I use an iPhone for everything and I'd kick myself if I didn't. The truth is Appleplay is annoying and intrusive to the BMW iDrive which I think is one of the best driver interfaces around and even better in MY 17. I'll turn Appleplay off but I'm happy it's there and hope it gets better integrated over time.

One thing I found particularly annoying is the activation of carplay on the in car display when I loaded the browser app on my phone.

CarPlay Issues
Apple this week updated its IOS to 10.3. One of the items specifically improved was the CarPlay interface. If you haven't already upgraded to 10.3 then you should give it a try. It has greatly improved the experience for me. Far less glitchy, drops signal less often and changes functions much faster.

I have a 2017 with 10/16 build. I was able to subscribe online for 20 years however I can not get CarPlay to work. I've tried deleting my iPhone and reinstalled it. I made sure CarPlay was set on the iPhone. Would you mind going over the steps how you activated it? Thanks.

I have the opportunity to pick up a Canadian car MY2017 March Build M2.
It does not have the Smart Phone Connectivity Package, which includes CarPlay. Is the a way to code or retrofit CarPlay to this car? Thanks |

Apple Car Play
My M2 is an MY17 that came without Apple Car Play. Recently I have been having some connection issues between my car and iPhone. Today, on my way to lunch, I was playing with the connected drive hoping to see some kind of operating system update. I didn't find it, but I did see Apple Car Play available for purchase for a one-time fee of $300. Up until this point, I've heard/read reviews from both sides; some said great things about the Car Play while others hold the opposite opinions. I haven't decided for myself, so I'm not going to commit at this time. But just FYI for those of you who have been waiting, Car Play is available for purchase over the air now (at least in the US market?).

I just purchased ConnectedDrive for my 2017 M2 through the ConnectedDrive store. The experience took about 15 minutes which is way more effort than should be necessary, but I'm just glad you buy it since the dealer told me that I was out of luck.
