From the sneak peak in that monster "Next-gen ST tires?" thread on roadraceautox.com, it appears the A052 still reigns in the dry by a bit over the others (RE-71RS, RT-660, N Fera sport R).

Yeah, but it wears quick and gets gummy on hot days.

Hoping the 71RS ends up being the perfect arrive & drive tire. The 71R grip in cold & wet was addicting, but gave up so quickly in the summer.

We shall see on the 71RS!

Not quite A052 speed in the dry, but it's a little quicker in dry & wet than the previous RE-71R (from other testing) and looks to be the new wet track tire king--which I like for an arrive & drive tire since most track tires suck in the wet. Plus, the available sizes of the 71RS better fit my setup.

The open questions remain consistency on hot track days (a weakness of the 71R & A052) and longevity after multiple track weekends (a weakness of the A052). Only one way to find out...

The good news is for local tracks I don't have to haul my Toyo RR's and change in the mornings & evenings each day. Just slap on the 71RS's the day before and use them all weekend (assuming it's not their drive to death/cords weekend ).

Extrapolating the Tirerack times into a ~1 minute course turns that 0.44 second lap advantage in the dry of the A052 into 0.88 seconds! Heck even a near 1/2 second is huge on a 30 second autocross course. I was hoping the RE-71RS would upend the TW200 field, but it appears to be just another all around TW200 tire albeit a very good one. Perhaps it's better for track events than the A052 though -- I'm guessing it will be.

Here's hoping that one day BFG will return to the fold with a Rival 2.0 that leaps out in front of the field. (dreams are easy)

For track tires I’ve always taken these TR tests with a grain of salt, since they use what would even be considered a basic AutoX course. Plus, our cars are heavier and have more power than what they always test with, so we’re adding more energy and stress into the tire and heat tolerance & longevity become big factors that aren't in their tests.

I’m guessing the 71RS is closer to the A052 on a road course than extrapolating the TR times, especially after lap 5-10 on a hot summer track day. I bet the 71RS ends up being less than 0.5s off the A052 on a 1:30 course after some hot laps, and we get all the wet, longevity, and consistency benefits that come with it. All speculation at this point, tho.

In my book, if I was going to run something as quick wearing as the A052, I’d just go slicks. Or at least pick a tire with better life and heat mgmt like the RR.

Yep, no doubt. I take these tests with a huge grain of salt for all the reasons you mentioned. On track an A052 is probably good for a hero lap (lap two) while the 71RS is likely a more realistic tire to use for 20 laps. Looking forward to your testing!

I used to love the BFG R1 on track and it was very close to a Hoosier A6 in speed (faster than the R6) on a large aggregate autox course in 95F summertime heat too (plus it wore dramatically longer than an A6 which we could cord within 40 runs!). I wish BFG had followed up development of the R1 and R1S. Those tires were actually fairly street-able too as long as it didn't rain (essentially a slick) since they were tough enough to handle some street features fine (unlike an A6) and wore well...somewhat similar to an NT-01 but faster. Horrific tread face noise and cavity noise, so they'd whine like a truck tire at speed on the highway, but on track you never notice the noise.

Eager to hear everyones feedback when you guys can eventually get them! Personally I love them, they are perfect in terms of grip for a stock powered car like mine.

I'm going to be on my 3rd set of RE71RS soon in 255/35/19 & 275/35/19 on OEM 437 wheels.

Wow - 3rd set! nice.

How do you find the wear characteristics and how many track days do you get out of a set? I'm in Sydney and i do track days at Sydney Motorsport Park - fast and relatively hard on tyres.

Also are they a fair stiff tyre and won't rollover too much on the fronts?

I get approximately 5 trackdays out of a set, over 200 laps (including the cooldown laps /outlaps etc). Wear is good for me, I am running -3.3 front camber and -2.2 rear camber and use a different set of wheels for street.

I rotate between Wakefield & Sydney Motorsport Park GP, my last outing I still set a PB on my 4th day with this set, so the grip consistency is still there although you have to really fight the car to extract the grip.

The tyre sidewalls are quite firm but the front end response is superb once the tyres are warm.

The 265/35 & 275/35 sizes aren't available, so there is no way for us to get a set.

GRM posted a review of the 71RS vs the RT660.

On a 1m30s road track the 71RS averaged 0.9s quicker on cold tire out laps, and 0.7s quicker on warm tire laps. GRM also stated, "We then headed out on the Bridgestones and immediately noticed a stronger on-center feel, receiving more tactile feedback with lateral loading. Even more impressive was the exceptional combined loading under trail braking and corner exit power-up."

As for Autox, the A052 was 0.2s quicker than the 71RS on a 30s course but the reviewers stated: "Both drivers preferred the driving dynamics of the Bridgestone" and that the A052 has a narrower peak performance window, but is tiny bit quicker when super dialed in.

But, we all know how quick the Yoko heat soaks and wears on a road track. Compared to the Yoko I'm guessing the 71RS will be few tenths slower on laps 1-3, equal pace during laps 4-5, and quicker during laps 6+ on the track. And, with longer tire life. All guesses at this point from the limited reviews, tho.

Couple all the above with the 71RS's killer wet performance, and it's sounding like an excellent track tire--especially considering you can truly arrive & drive on it. Hopefully I can get them and test them soon.

Rears until October. lol. I got nothing to lose at this point since my Cup2's have a good amount of life left in them, plus this summer heat isn't going to let up until October anyways, so continue to wait it out.
