I distinctly remember an article in Sport Compact Car about the 1999 Civic Si and how brilliant it was. I believe the closing sentence of the article was something like "When your Mopar-loving neighbor asks you where you put the rice, you can proudly respond 'the same place you put your pork rinds!'"

I don't think you would see that in print in 2020, but at the time the concept of a "rice burner" as a performance car was not offensive and was actually a point of pride, at least as I saw it on the import scene in New England at the time.

I ended up buying one. It's the first car I ever bought new, and the first car I ever extensively modded.

Eibach Pro-kit, Koni Yellows, Comptech rear strut brace and sway bar, Jackson Racing supercharger, AEM intake, DC Sports Stainless headers, Mugen twin loop exhaust, ACT clutch with lightweight AASCO flywheel, custom Hondata tune, and yes those are 14lb Volk TE-37's. Go big or go home!

I always wondered if "ricer" was meant to describe an Asian made car or an Asian person's taste of mods. Either way I think it's best not to use it.
You believe the word "ricer" is offensive..

God, some of you guys are softer than butt cheeks!

Why don't you let the Asian folks get offended for themselves before jumping on the SJW bandwagon..

Everyone in the car community knows that rice, as an adjective, is a general slang for a poorly modified vehicle, with nothing pejorative against Asians...

The M2 is loud and boisterous, the CS takes it up a notch further, so you can't expect the average adult people outside of this forum's echo chamber, to not assume that a car of this nature only appeals to younger demographic, as oppose to a more pedestrian vehicle..

To the average laymen, it looks plain bizarre to see a little sporty car like a Subaru STI or Civic Type R, bellowing down the street, making a bunch of noise and kicking up dust all over the place, only to witness some stocky, middle age man hopping out the driver's seat. Like dude, did you borrow your son's car to come to Home Depot or something. 🤷🏻

Unless you're pushing some exotic sports car with some prestige - like that one that cost a 1/2 million dollars as has the horsies in front, having a loud, showy vehicle is going to make anyone over the age of 35, look like an outlier in society.

You can choose to just brush it off and or you can grovel about it but it is what it is..

3 years?! LOL, the M550 3-year depreciation will buy an OG M2 as a beater car to go with the CS. Just his drive off the lot depreciation will buy a higher mileage E46 M3. In the meantime, someone has to pilot that thing with a wheelbase that makes a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta88 look small.

Exactly. At all the CCA events I've been to with the M2C since buying it in Sept 2018 (2018 CCA Oktoberfest, PerfCenter autox events), both the OG M2 and M2C owners were all 40+ and most of us were 50+. (I'm 62 and have been autocrossing, tracking, time trials, etc, for 45 years). The M2, in all three guises, has brought a ton of long time BMW crazies out of the woodwork to buy one when they had given up on BMW.

I can understand why. For those of us born between the 50s and the 70s, we got to live and enjoy some serious magic.

We witnessed history being made from Woodstock, to the moon and back. From Hendrix to Pink Floyd, from Live Aid to fall of Berlin Wall.

And we got to see E9 and the genius of the 3.0 CSL, we fell in love with 2002tii and the JPS E24 M635CSi.

We celebrated the advent of internet and the digital revolution at the time when such wild animals roamed the Earth as the great E30 M3 and the heftier brotherhood of the Bavarian Beast E92 M3.

Yes, we love and cherish the immortal F87 M2 CS because it reminds us all of the days when we witnessed such incredible feats of human motoring achievement and feel in our bones; the M is BACK.

The fun has returned, the roar and the thrill of the greatest motoring pedigree has once more been affirmed.

We have here among us, the last and best of the greatest motoring lineage; the masterful, the suspenseful, the forever more intoxicating M2 CS, to remind us that .....

THE LEGEND LIVES ON
.

and to conclude, you can eat your heart out William Shakespeare; you never got to know how good us guys have had it these past six decades. If you had, you too would be serenading the metal beast.

There are MANY different types of car owners and there is an outlet for all of them.

If you track your car and live in my area I'll likely see you at the track. It's where I want to spend 100% of my time with ALL my BMW's.

Also of note: Track owners don't give a flying F what you drive or how it looks, or how the exhaust crackles pops and bangs.

We all have one common goal. To get around the track as fast as possible and be safe while doing it.

See you at the track!

To equate age with the type of car one drives is close minded at best, pre-supposing that as we age we must own bigger, more comfortable land yachts that get easier and easier to drive. Talk about assumptive reasoning, especially in this PC age.

For the love of God, Paul Newman was still racing well into his 70's. Who says I have to mug around town in a rolling couch? I don't condemn my buddies for driving around in an S class and they don't condemn me for driving around in sporty cars.

That neighbor's a dope.

Side note: what are the expectations for "growing up?" Is one supposed to buy an appliance-mobile at some point to be considered "grown-up?"

He's a bit right. A classic E30/36/E46 would be much less ostentatious.

I like both, but my CS will be white/black (matte) wheels/red brakes.

From my perspective, using ricer is like using beaner, but then you probably think that one is ok too.

Every culture and race consume their version of rice or beans, so in modern times, reducing a particular group to one specific cuisine almost has no meaning and is borderline silly and ignorant.

Like all things, language changes over time. The word rice or what constitutes a ricer, in the context of an automobile conversation, nowadays particularly when discussing modification, has no racial connotations.

However, I'm really glad some of you believe this is offensive to a particular race because that means you never really experienced actual racism. Which is good sign for all of us.
