Aircon impact on performance?

Does the M2 turn off the aircon at higher RPM's automatically? I read that some BMW's do this.

What sort of impact does having the aircon on have on the cars performance?

Even in sport plus mode, I feel a fairly noticeable decrease in performance with ac on, which is not surprising. Could be partly psychological since the windows are up and I hear less of an actual exhaust note and more speaker generated sound. Stock M2.

I'm pretty sure all automotive air compressors disengage at high RPMs (+5k). Power to run the compressor is very minimal. Probably less than 1-3 HP. I think the clutch disengages to protect the compressor from over spinning.

As long as I can remember, BMW's turn off the AC when you fully depress the accelerator past the resistance point. You can test it out, adjust the vent so that cold air is blowing directly on your face, slam the pedal and you'll suddenly feel the AC get cut off as warm air blows your way.

Air con, does have a slight affect on performance in my E36 M3. Was hoping it would not be noticeable in the M2.

Short answer. More power you’re car has the less you will notice the aircon sucking out performance. No matter what though, AC will always use some power from the engine to operate.

When tracking the car I personally don’t have the aircon on full blast, I always have it just on or in the middle fan speed.

I agree with this.

The problem is that many only do this at very high rpm, or at WOT.

Usually it's harder for me to get it up when the aircon is too cold.

Oh, you're talking about a different kind of performance.

Almost all modern vehicles turn off the compressor at high RPM (or hard pedal input). The M2 does it, my truck does it, my wifes Mazda 3 does it, etc.

Are you sure you weren't driving faster because you were in a rush to get out of a boiling hot car? lol

My Father's '65 Fairlane used to need to have the aircon switched off to tackle steep hills.

But then, it couldn't slow to a stop from freeway speeds using just the brakes either...

Can't say for sure, but I certainly did notice the increase in heat and sweat while the AC was off!

What’s funny to me is that the cats here in Germany will do hot laps and track days with the windows up and AC on. On the Ring this makes sense as you can do over 160mph on the straight, but these are the rules at smaller tracks too.

"Sorry officer I was testing the AC...."
