I have to check...
Unless it's bad, it can only be heard when cold or warming up. The easiest place to hear it is actually at the passenger wheel. It's easier to hear once the high idle settles a bit but while the engine is still cold.

She’s Finally Here! Valve Cover goes on today and injectors get dropped in. So excited to get my little monster back. Looks like it got a set of aftermarket valves too. Excited to see what we can do with this bad boy!

This will likely be my final post unless anyone has any other questions. I’ll try to check periodically.

Just bought a 2021 M2C and I dont remember this noise when I purchased it....but I thought something didnt sound right, googled and found this thread.

Would you mind listening to my video and tell me if this sounds very similar?
I have an 535i N55 so I know what injector tick sounds like, this isnt injector tick on this M2C...this is clearly a lifter or exhaust cam.

Have all dealer records and still under warranty for another year, so I'll drop it off if you think this sounds similar (give it 10mins to upload)

That sounds pretty similar to what I experienced. Does it do it when it’s warm and increase with engine speed? I could always hear it with the windows down driving past a fence and it kinda faded into engine noise around 3k RPM

Yes does it while warm too, after more searching I am pretty convinced I have the same issue going on with the cams. I'll drop it off at the dealer and tell them to reference the PUMA case #.

Not to highjack thread but my M2C confirmed dealer is opening up the engine to look at exhaust cam bolts, thanks for the thread info this helped me steer them. They gave no pushback and agreed the noise was not normal. I am very confident I caught this almost at the moment it began, no more than 30-35 miles since it started it, and oil is fresh so damage if any should be minimal.

Got my M2 back all fixed! They did a Tsara case and replaced cam carrier bolts. I’ll make a fresh thread with before/after videos for others along with all the parts and steps the dealer did if someone’s out of warranty.

Adding to this thread, I've been experiencing the same ticking noise, mine is quieter on idle so I'm hoping I'm catching it early on and avoid an possible damage/rebuild as I'm out of factory warranty already and rolled the dice on no extended warranty.

2020 M4 26k miles completely stock

Here are videos of mine from the engine bay: https://youtube.com/shorts/01s1fcZjtLE & https://youtube.com/shorts/dPYD3-vM6rc

I also found another M2 comp with same noise I have:

I'm taking it to an independent shop tomorrow to get it diagnosed and hopefully fixed. Will update this thread with the results.

UPDATE: The independent shop didn't want to touch it / teardown so they sent me to the dealer. Dealer came back saying metal shavings found in the oil filter so I'm expecting the worst right now with needing a new engine if it's not savable. Teardown will begin tomorrow to see if the technician can find the source of what's causing the damage. My first and probably last BMW given how poor my experience has been in only 2 months of ownership. Car is out of warranty so options are limited at this point.
