Aftermarket charge pipe - why?

The aftermarket CP's are the same size as OEM. Other than construction material, what is the benefit.

The OEM is known to pop off under higher boost pressures, and rarely under stock boost pressures.

Do a quick search and you'll see why. The OEM n55 charge pipe has been known to burst on stock cars (not just the M2)

As mentioned the stock one is almost guaranteed to fail under high boost.
I have seen it fail with stock power as well

I have spent about an hour searching on this subject. I found one instance where the guy was running 18psi. This I understand.

I respect what you say, but the statistics don't reflect this.

I'm surprised as it's not that uncommon. Last service advisor I spoke with said that he's seen plenty of cracked ones.

Then roll with the stock pipe.

Are you looking only at M2s, or all N55s? Anecdotally, it is common with stock N55. First (of many) google results:

Another Stock N55 Charge Pipe Failure
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1407066

"The service advisor said that this was the 3rd stock N55 to come in this week with a cracked charge pipe. The other two vehicles had cracked charge pipes around 35,000 miles and 50,000 miles."

it's such cheap insurance and doesn't add any stress to a stock car (for those that are concerned with that). I literally see no reason why anyone wouldn't want to upgrade.

If the plastic CP cracks there might be a chance plastic pieces get sucked into the intake and that'll be fun for sure

Most of the breaks are around the flange where it connects to the main tube, the breaks are generally very clean stress related fractures and don't often produce shrapnel. From what I have heard there has been no engines taken out due to a charge pipe breaking.

You also get 1/8" npt bungs for water methanol injectors, boost reference ports, Hobbs switches, and peace of mind not ending up in limp mode.

Not sure what you're looking for then. People have answered your question as to why people upgrade the CP. You don't seem to want to hear it. Given no one is forcing you to upgrade, you can - as suggested - just roll with the stock pipe.

you dont have to..most people do it because if it blows up, your engine will not function until its replaced.

Also no gurantee the dealership will have that part in stock so you would have to wait for it to arrive and until then your car it out of commission.

For some people, time is more important then money others money is more important then time.

The type of people who buy M2's, $200 for insurance to prevent being stuck on the side of the road is worth it. I lose more money missing 1-3days of work then $200.

OEM is plastic and so due to heat cycling from under the hood temps, it will harden/age and become more brittle.

Eventually, even on stock cars, this brittle plastic part can fail.

I chose to fit ER boost pipes (both sides of i/cooler) as they are more resilient/robust, have a smoother larger bore, come with assorted bungs (futureproofing should I feel the need to install WMI) and install is easy esp if done whilst fitting upgraded i/cooler.

I had ER pipes on my modded BMW's (e91 n54, F2x n55 & F87 n55) and fitting larger i/cooler can sometimes cause laggy part throttle. In my experience, installing ER pipes helped retain oem throttle response.

I've been eyeing this particular CP for months. Increased throttle response is a big plus in my book. Not to jinx myself but, I've been running +5 psi for about 15k miles on the stock CP with no problems.

An internet search doesnt constitute statistics. Statistics would require data of BMW warranty replacement charge pipes.

My stock charge pipe, on stock tune with just Akra DP w/sport cat at the time, popped at 33k miles.

There have been various threads on this forum over the past few years where people have chimed in whose stock charge pipes popped off.

That is still not a statistic, of course, but it's proof that it definitely does happen.
