N55 with tons of hardware modifications is barely an N55 anymore.

Besides 3-4 main parts (pistons, turbos etc) what else has changed?

It's basically the m235i with a tune isn't it ? I'm just repeating what I've heard, even turbo is the same isn't it ? (Could be wrong).

Are you referring to just the engine or the car? The car is nowhere near an M235i with a tune.

The engine is based off of the N55 but has a long list of hardware components from the S55. It's not only a tune, and signs are pointing towards the turbo in the M2 being different. I can find the list for you.

Here:

Closed-deck engine (water jacket surrounding the cylinders is sealed at the top, allowing for high cylinder pressures)
High Precision Injection system
Double VANOS
VALVETRONIC
Pistons from M3/M4 S55 engine, with top ring optimized for the use of grey-cast iron liners
Crankshaft main bearing shells from M3/M4 S55 engine
Turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold
Aerodynamically tuned air intake manifold
High performance spark plugs
Extra water radiator
Additional oil cooler for transmission oil (DCT only)
Modified oil sump
Additional oil sump cover limits movement of oil under acceleration
Extra oil suction pump send oil back to rear pop oil sump when braking heavily
Special suction system for oil supply to turbocharger under high acceleration

Doesn't really sound like a 'bloated' or 'old news' N55 to me, haha.

IND has a couple DIY mods in the Cosmetic Modifications section. Here is the grill one. http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1250436

It's still an N55, maybe I should have been more clear. I would not call it an 'old news' 'bloated' N55. It's very different from the standard one.

I don't understand why some people (not you, but others) get worked up over it being too close to an N55... other than for bragging rights with an S in front of the designation.

I had an M235i on loan for two days and it was a GREAT engine. Sounded great. Had lots of pull throughout the rev range. It had what felt like almost instant torque all of the time. Most surprisingly, it felt more responsive and linear than the S55 in my M4.

It clearly had less power but was I ever surprised with how the engine responded to input. If the N55 in the M2 is an improved version of the N55 in the M235i, everyone should be very happy IMO. It's a great engine.

I've driven it only for about half an hour. Here's what I've gathered.

Pros:

- the thing I was surprised about the most was the exhaust note. It is unquestionably the best exhaust note M currently offers, in my opinion. Better than I expected.

- A pro for me, but even in comfort, the slightest acceleration is aggressive and noticeable.

- Easily functions as a daily driver. But definitely a sporty drive.

- Looks. Tons of stares, smiles, for driving it once at 1 am and once at 8 am.

- Size. Perfect. Nothing more to explain.

- Wheel spacing. Spacers are not needed IMO.

Cons

- NONE AT ALL (just kidding)

-Sound system is a solid 8/10. Definitely not trash but it's definitely not the best in class.

- Halogen turn lights. Really want to replace these with LED bulbs.

- No cons yet about the driving, I'm still in break in. I've also never owned a car on this level before.

Right now I am on full Kool-aid mode, but rightfully so.

This car is not over-hyped, it really does deserve 5/5 stars.

The near 3 year obsessive following if this car for me has not come to an end. It has only just begun.

If you are thinking about getting an M2, stop thinking about it, just get it.

Unless you're like OP which is perfectly understandable because the C7 is a monster in it's own right. That car is also a beast.
Surely the big downside is it comes with a bloated N55 engine and not a true M engine - not a hater btw as I love the car but I think they fcuked up by not adding the latest power plant. N55 is old news.
That's nothing but a straight hater comment and was the same thing that was said about the 1M about it not being an S motor. Let me go check the value of my 1m right quick and tell you if the value changed because of the motor.

Oh wait. Did you know a 2011 1m holds its value better than any other 2011 model made by BMW including the e90 M3 ?

Lotsa people have hangups over a letter when M car is an entire package , not just an engine.

No hate from me guys, like I said I love the car.

I was only referring to the engine not the entire car which is clearly M. Mentally I was comparing the M2 engine to what an enthusiast could of already modded in an N55. There's only so much you'll get out if it (for those who want to mod it).

I have a modded N54 so will happily see you in the twisties (in my rear view mirror)

Anyway it's a lovely car and wasn't trying to upset anyone. Enjoy.

As to the OP, I am wanting to do a Euro Delivery next summer, early fall for an M2. If I can't get one because of insane waiting lists or bloated over MSRP, I'll happily move along to something else outside of the BMW world. There are lots of awesome cars out there. I've approached my dealer with what I want - I'm happy to place a deposit now for the car if they can guarantee the Euro delivery for August/September 2017, but I have heard nothing from them. The one they have (HEA car) is still on the lot because they are wanting about $15K over sticker if you want to buy it now.

Hopefully things will settle down but if not.... a Euro Delivery on a new Boxster sounds nice.

So an E93 convertible in the twisties? In a straight line I understand.

What did you do to it if I may ask?

+1 on the 235's engine - that wasn't the weak point of the car for me - it was the suspension, brakes and overall feel of the thing. You don't need 600 BHP to have a fun car that handles well and also pulls hard. Cars with the right amount of balance can be a blast in the ~350 BHP range - which is a designation the M2 certainly seems to fit.
