4 x 255/35/19 on stock rims?

Hi folks,

Wondering if I could safely run 255s all the way round to be able to move tires front to back (by remounting) to extend their life on the track.

So basically square tires, staggered rims. I think 255s are within the range of both 9 and 10 inch widths... should I be concerned about the slight stretch on the rears? Might be slightly squishier on turn-in?

Planning to run my PSS 245 and 265 with my 437Ms on the street (they wouldn't last a day at the track) and getting a second set of 437Ms with 4x 255 R-compound tires for the track as I like the look and durability of the forged OEM wheels.

Hoping to keep everything (except pads) stock otherwise.

I had a set of staggered contis that saw 12000km of sporty street and 6hrs of track. The inside of the rears wore first and the outside of the fronts wore first... hence my thinking...

Thoughts?

You can probably do it, but it might be better to just get a set of Apex or similar wheels for track. You can get 9.5 square then and split the difference.

Very true, I had also been thinking that.

Then I saw a set of 437Ms take offs for $1700 CAD and the wondering began...

It puts me $400-500 ahead and with lighter wheels (even the 18" EC7s are heavier) that are forged and that could be resold for not much less down the road.

If I was going to track more than 6-8hrs a year (2hrs each time ), then I start into coilovers, camber plates and some aero dodads as well, but I'd say I'm 3 years away from going there. Hence the finest-cheapest approach to my set up.

I love the power and refinement of the M2, but I may go back to the simplicity of an FRS/BRZ/GT86 for a dedicated track car in the future...

And so concludes my life story.

So you don't see any issues otherwise? My tire and wheel guy doesn't think it'll be an issue, but it may not be worth the hassle of mounting and dismounting the tires...

If you want to swap front to rear on a square set you want 4x rear rims, then run spacers to get the correct front offset.

BMW 437’s won’t allow that.

Not sure about that. If you want to run 255 all around, by far the best thing to do is get 4x front 437M or other OEM wheel.

The front and rear offsets are functionally identical on the OEM wheels. 9" ET 29 and 10" ET 40 works out the same in terms of poke.

I like it. Plus a 19x9 et 29 with a 255 would be a great spare to have in the trunk.

I think I'll buy the set and the tires, then see if someone has a pair of fronts they are selling and sell the rears or something like that.

I suspect that I'll be good even if I give up an inch of rim at the rear. The limiting factor is front left at my local track, then front right, then the rears.

Maybe it'll even undo some of the initial push with my stock set up on several exits...

Not sure if the 19x10" ET 40 rims can fit in the front without spacers (to clear the suspension) and camber plates to avoid rubbing the fenders. Has anyone tried?

I cut a groove on one of my front struts from a front tire that was mounted on a rear rim by accident at the tire shop. I just looked at the tire size when putting the wheel on the car.
It made one hell of a noise, so I didn't go far.

Damn. That sucks. I can't imagine how that convo went... did they replace the damaged parts for you or say it was your fault for not double checking?

I feel lucky to know a very meticulous tire/wheel/detail guy. I trust him completely; one of the very few! He's also crazy fast in his FRS at the track (2:17 at Calabogie)...

This is easy, and has been done many times. 255/35/19 works just fine on 9 & 10", just as you say.
