Increasing air flow

From what I've read, the stock air box flows fairly well. I've purchased an AFE dry panel filter and was wondering if taking the stock air screen off would help. It seems like a simple, no cost mod that could relieve a little restriction. Any down side? Anyone tried this? I'm referring to part # 15 in the diagram.
