Looking at fun cars - 2007 M5

Most recent car I am looking at is 2007 M5 manual with 64k on it. Dealer is asking $23k. Does it sound fun or steer clear?

Stay the hell away from that car. You will spend a ton of money on it, guaranteed.

It sounds fun only if you have the money to repair the car when something goes wrong.

You’d have to define fun, but if I were to look for a cheap thrill you can’t go wrong with something like an s2k unless you’re a bigger guy.

Well the question is how much is too much. It's a BMW M so I know I will be sinking money into it. It won't be tracked nor a daily driver just something to take out on weekends and scare the neighbors

Getting the manual will save you from any expensive SMG repairs, but you'll still have to address rod bearings and potentially VANOS issues. Plus that thing gets about 11.5 MPG driving like a grandma and drinks a liter of oil every 1,000 miles.

With all that said, I miss mine everyday and would pick up another in a heartbeat. With Eisenmann Race exhaust, it wailed like a Gallardo.

Well, if the engine issues occur or if it goes which is very possible, the cost of repairing or replacing it might very well exceed the cost of purchasing the car in your case.

S85 and reliability are certainly not synonymous with one another. I have a friend that daily’d a manual e60 M5, and he had fun with it without too many issues occurring. So who knows, you might get lucky. I personally just wouldn’t trust one coming out of a dealership, though, unless their reputation was high.

Going to drive it on saturday, also will press dealer for warranty (it is a BMW dealer) I've been poking around on different forums, seems the 6MT doesn't have quite the problems of the SMG but all concurred that it will need rod bearings at some point

Big problems from the VANOS solenoids and throttle body actuators on those. Not incredibly difficult jobs but expensive parts (keep in mind when you replace something on that car you will usually be replacing two of them, one on each bank). Rod bearings are another common problem.

Probably the most fun car I've ever owned though.

I tend to agree you can get into something better for 23k but I doubt you'd be unhappy with the M5.

T/A and RB's are same issues as s65 m3s....no big deal. T/A you take care of when its an issue, RB you do preventatively to save the cost of a replacement motor. Vanos issues are kinda different story, and dont even mess with SMG...

Why not buy a cool muscle car or something? Or was the Kia comment a joke?
