Strange whining noise
Hi all!
New fellow M2 owner here.. My car now has 1,700 mile on it and running in service has been completed at the usual 1,200 mile mark. I get a strange whine off the car only under very low load say 0-15mph, comes to light when sitting in traffic or parking the car. Its not really loud but it is noticeable.. I have also noticed when sitting in 5th gear and doing a mediocre pull from around 75 mph i get a strange whine.. On full throttle no noise can be heard. Seems to be more noticeable in comfort mode.. I have went back to the dealer quite a number of times now with this and they tell me this is normal, although they do not fill me with confidence so i have asked them to get another M2 same spec in to check the sound i am hearing is normal. So i thought this would be the best place to ask if these sounds are normal with the M2? I am getting to the paranoid stage now and radio is always off just so i can listen out for any odd sounds, hoping you guys can possibly put my mind to rest if i am worrying over nothing here ....? I should mention the car is a 2018 DCT model, build date May 2018 AB |

Only whining I hear in my LCI is when my wife is in the car. "This car is too loud."
I have about 4,000kms on the car. Bunch of mods, so maybe they drown it out... |

Probably the artificial noise from ASD. Either way if the car is running fine and there are no codes I wouldn't worry about it. Your car is very new so noises will come and go a bit through its early life. I have 33,000 miles on mine and there have been slight changes, nothing significant really.

I hear a bit of a whining noise between 1500-2500 RPM (IIRC), at low load, like you said.
Not sure what it could be - the turbo? Drive-train components rotating? In any case, it doesn't really bother me since most of the time the car is loud enough that I never hear it. |

I'm guessing it's due to lack of sound proofing / insulation. I hear some strange sounds under low load as well.
I thought had an issue but then drove my friend's M2 and his sounded the same. Both are MT. |

I have a similar whine from 3900 RPM to 4000 RPM in 5th gear (DCT), only when accelerating, stops after 4000 RPM and decelerating.
Seems the same whine is now occurring at 2,000RPM in 7th. |

I treat this car like my 2nd child so had to be sure |

You might want to check this thread out (point #2):
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1497569 I posted there on my experience. If it is the same noise you have, I would pretty much bet on it coming from the rear diff. I do not think it is anything to worry about, but yet, "noises" are always hard to describe and subjective. |

Bet it's the rear diff.
Completely normal. Similar thing with Corvettes...people would bring cars in to get checked but there were no issues......it was such an issue(people coming in for no reason) that I believe Chevy put in the owners manual that on occasion the diff. can be heard, and that it's part of normal operation. I believe all is good my friend..now keep driving |

Hey guys,
I've also had that whining noise since a while now. I've managed to shot a video...You can hear it around 80-100km/h. Could someone please confirm that you have the same sort of noise? Is it still normal? I really would appreciate your opinion :-) http://sendvid.com/v31vc3fa Greetings from Germany Jürgen |
