E60 has the least aggressive look IMO. Then again it would be the last one I would ever choose over all of these haha. Was such a drastic difference interior and exterior wise between E60 to F10.

Amazing to see nobody mentioned the F12 M6!

I've always thought BMW nailed that front end...it's the perfect amount of aggression without being over the top with sharp lines and additional/un-needed layers and panels.

E46 was, and still is, a beautiful car. Somehow, it doesn't look nearly as dated as cars of that era.
The 1M looks a bit... goofy? silly? ... in these isolated pics, but on the whole, it's truly more than the sum of it's parts.

E60...the one obvious M where the looks never did justice to that V10 monster. Still consider it one of the poorest designed M's ever made.

Do you think that the M2 Competition front bumper looks more up to date and modern comparing to M3/M4? Do you agree that M3/M4 front bumper looks dated already comparing to M2 and M5?

For modern M-cars beginning with F-chassis yes, this is true.

But worthy of noting that this "rule" is quite recent and don't necessarily apply universally to older M-cars of the E-chassis (see below) :

Artemis you might also want to add these to the first post if you so wish

E36/7 & E36/8 - Z3 M Roadster & M Coupé

E39 M5

E46 M3

E63/E64 M6 Coupé & Cabriolet

E85/E86 Z4 M Roadster & M Coupé

a lot of it is change due to aerodynamics- BMW began with their " Air curtain" technology on the 1M.

UPDATE: Applies to the E85 (Model Year 2006) and all later models. Thanks to Law for pointing this out.
I believe Mercedes uses the opposite - A for AMG and ∀ Avantgarde (their Msport).

Why can’t BMW do the M2 hood line like this?! just like the G series BMWs

The car instantly looks perfect with the line where it should!

Interesting evolution - thanks for posting! The think I love about some the early front bumpers (E39, etc.) is that they look cool but still preserve the "Q-ship" nature the some treasure.
