Yeah I mean bottom line is the FUN factor is just too hard to match. Yes In a traffic jam youre swearing up and down and wishing you had an auto, but for that brief moment. Then you get back in the open and all is forgotten.

Nothing like being on the roll, thrwing that clutch to the floor board and giving a fellow M passer buyer a little blip representing a little hello and respect for the car.

Auto: oh shit wait let me stop put this bitch in neutral, oh shit thats reverse, wait got it, reeeev.

AMEN

Think that will make it in production?

Next: it better not have the N55. It has to have a proper M motor.
Whatever engine BMW decides to put into the M2, likely the new N55B30T0, will be fantastic. And although people believe that all M-engines were once bespoke, they had similar architecture to their non-M brothers. The new S63 actually shares the same bore and stroke as the N63. And, many BMW engines use the 500cc per cylinder displacement. Trust me, just because it doesn't say S55, doesn't mean it will not be tuned by M, or modified by M. At its heart, the thing will still be "Powered by M".

:this:

BMW decides what an M motor is. Not fans. Fans can stamp their feet, pout, cry, whine, and threaten to buy some other model if BMW doesn't designate the motor they want, the exterior color they want, or if they don't want the active sound that Bmw designed into the car.

Of course what usually happens is the same demanding fans realize how silly their complaint actually is when considering the entire vehicle as a whole.

Very true. At the heart of the situation, what does it truly matter which engine is in the car? BMW knows what they are doing. The M2 is going to be a blast and super fun to drive and own. I think that "we" are getting to caught up in the little specifics of what this car will and will not have instead of looking at the big picture. Personally it does not really matter to me what engine is stuffed in the bay as long as it performs, which we know it will

  3. The rev nature needs to be more faster like S65 than S55.
  4. Add CF in hood, fenders, roof, and trunk to drop weight lower,
  5. Have proper brakes, and tires as wide as possible that they can stuff in rear to give more pronounced aggressive stance.
  6. Improved gas mileage would also be a plus.
  7. Bring back functional hood scoops a la E92 M3. To get extra cooling for hot turbo motor.
  8. Keep price affordable.
Is that all?

I actually quite like your wish list, but in my experience... Fast, Nimble, Cheap. Pick two.

The S55 engine block is too tuneable (closed deck) and would put M3/4 sales in jeopardy.

Also I think that the weight savings will be substantial (BMW can produce carbon fiber cheap with its new CFRP factories) but the power not much higher than the 1M (max. 340-350hp).
Good point on the turbo, but hard to imagine that they'll transform the N55 into a twin-turbo, put it in an M car, and still call it an N55.

I also agree on the use of CFRP, vis-a-vis their ramp-up of new production facilities. If they're going to keep the engine/power relatively modest over the M Performance series-based cars, then they should be planning on going big on weight reduction.

I have had the same thought... Whatever power plant they put in this thing, I'm sure it will have ample power - but I'd really like to see it be responsive and willing to rev.

Same here. May as well enjoy the 235 for now.

Any chance that the M2 will get the *open* side vents that were initially scheduled for the 1M but didn't make it to final production because of constraints ?

Back in 2010 the ///M division couldn't get the fender sheet stamping molds accurate enough within the allotted 1M time/budget: accurately mirroring the two fenders sides with functional vents proved to be a PITA.

If the M2 prototype features real functional (open) side vents, then this could explain the out-of-place bolted-on part on the front fenders: hide this novelty + keep the air flowing through these vents.

Render of the 1M featuring open vents:

There seems to be equally a bolted-on part on the rear of the M2 prototype. So, while they're at it, they can fit some rear vents as well (M235i versus 1M):

Undoubtedly BMW M will take care of that aspect too. That's more something for the final stage. Same happened to the 1M (test mule versus final version).

Am I the only one disappointed in the look of the M2 so far? I hope they pull out some more design effort and take it away from the 2 series "almost a a 1 series look." I do understand they are still far from production, but it doesn't have that totally new look the M4/M3 have. More of a lazy sketch artist who just erased a few spots from the 1/2 series.

People were saying that of the early 1Ms and it's prototypes. Come the full reveal, all will be well.

Faith in BMW you must have.
