I am okay with OE height but confused on the reduction %. It's a daily driver for me, and 2 days on the track per year. So maybe 10-15% should be right for me?

20% reduction means 20% less movement and 20% more effort required.
Ronald recommended 20% to me as the less extreme version. I like it, but reverse is tough. Takes two hands sometimes... And the gear noise can be annoying when just pottering about. |

Great news here. I fitted a Raceseng shift knob and all the noise from the SSK has gone completely.
It mush have been the light plastic BMWP shift knob causing a resonance. Now it's just fantastic, the 500 gram Raceseng knob makes the shifts butter smooth and even makes reverse easy to get. It's a hybrid knob with stainless core and round black delrin outer. It feels fabulous and won't get too hot or cold like a bare metal one. Yes, Delrin (Dupont trade name for Acetal) is a super hard dense plastic that can be milled & machined as this is. It threads onto the stainless core.

The adaptor works perfectly. The standard BMW knobs are just a push fit.
The raceseng adaptor fits snugly over the shift arm and locks on with 1/8" hex grub screws and gives you a precision threaded attachment for their shift knob. Attaching the gaiter is more tricky. The standard gaiter is plastic welded to the shift knob, you can snap it off quite easily and you're left with a nylon ring glued to the top of the alcantara which you can't remove. I had to carefully open up this opening to about 20mm or so with a dremmel to allow it to slip over the Raceseng adaptor. Then the new shift knob screws down on top of it to conceal the top of the gaiter. Their method with a zip tie assumes you have a loose fabric / leather gaiter top but like I said the BMW gaiter had this plastic ring built in. That's why mine has the wrong gaiter on at present, I didn't want to butcher the orange stitched one just in case I didn't like the shifter or it didn't fit etc. I'll try and get some pictures. |

I have the heaviest knob they make on my AS SSK. The 735 Gram Ashiko. I'm going to sell that one and get a slightly lighter one fitted. Nothing wrong with it just want to go with a different style/shape. It completes the package doesn't it

In my 31 years (!) of owning and modding cars I might say that this single item is the most complete and perfect mod I've ever fitted.
The quality is unreal, the machining work is without fault. The fit of the adaptor and the knob onto the adaptor is like something from a swiss watch. Even the packaging was spot on, down to the little silk effect draw string bag that protects the shifter in the foam padding. But on top of all that it actually WORKS way better than I imagined possible. Expectations exceeded on all fronts. All for $130US! |

They make awesome knobs....The weight of it really makes the AS SSK pure bliss....Glad its now shifting like it should be.

i like the rondur but having had a solid metal shifter in the past, personally i found them too cold to hold in winter and burning hot in summer too.

Did you guys use locktite on the adapter? I find with the alan wrench type locks it tends to weaken over time and it'll shift and wiggle.
Also anyone contemplating the slammer shift knob should get it. I've tried a lot of their shift knobs and slammer/slammology is my favorite so far for the heavier shift knobs. |

I'll use loctite if it ever comes loose.
It's only a quick job to do. I'm really loving the shifter it's made it into a different car to drive. Way better. |

I had the same concern, but my car is garaged 90% of the time, and I went for the texture finish, so hopefully it won't be that bad. Instead of messing with the OE knob and boot, I had my boot custom made by Coby Wheel, and install was a breeze. It completely changed the shift feel.
