Correction. They did not change the backing plate, removed the rocks that collected there. This is a design flaw and they said a recall on the part would most likely be coming in the future. Until then I'll keep making them spend service hours cleaning my car's tires.

Sorry if this has been answered or discussed already, but is this still an issue on MY2017?

Oh man, there are a lot of us waiting for that part number. I am so sick of the dealer thinking I'm imagining this noise.

So got my baby back with the new shields installed. Attached are pics of the old/new shields together with the workorder outlining the problem, solution, and part numbers.

Hope you all can approach your service advisor with the info and get the problem rectified.

Sorry, I didn't take the pics so I'm unable to supply in bigger size. You will find the part numbers on the workorder if that's what you're looking for.

Did they charge you for the parts and labor?

No. It's covered under warranty.

BTW, for all of you who've asked, my dealership is TheBMWStore here in Vancouver.

I have had my MY17 M2 6 days and 190 miles and have had this noise over 10 times. I live in an area with damaged roads, many stones and gravel so am a prime candidate for this issue.

Looks like there is a clear fix here to stop stones getting into the car's workings, will let the dealer know in time for the 1200 mile service and post the outcome.

hjk thanks a million for this

Nice. This has only happened to me twice, but good to know that there is a resolution to this issue. I will make sure that it gets done at me next service as the car is away for the winter.

Has any MY17 got theirs changed? BMW took a look at mine and they said I already have the new part.

Not sure if they changed it for later production but my MY17 did not have the new part. Mine is getting them updated next week.

Someone in another thread said he got them replaced with a week 43 build so idk what to believe.

After having the new shields installed for about a month I have not heard the soda crunch sound once. So those of you who hear it, you should probably get them replaced with the new part.

soda can crunch noise is gravel in brakes

Got this noise on the first weekend I had the car and had to drive over a gravel road for a while. Freaked me out! Crawled under car and could not see anything. Eventually figured it was gravel in between pads and guard plates. Reversed at some speed and they spat out. No more noise.

Thank you so much for this. Just made my appointment for tmrw. My car is a MY 2017 October build and i just got this noise today. Not the soda crunch but some kind of scraping noise from the wheel well as i was backing out of my driveway today. It went away very quickly but i definitely heard something. 800miles on the car. Will update if/when the issue is resolved.

Has there been documented damage to anything (besides our collective psyche) as a result of the gravel being trapped?

Update on my 2017

Dropped the car off this AM. The dealership just called and said i have the newest part # as shown in the work order by hjk BUT... there is another fix according to them. they will wield mesh over the vent openings to prevent stones from getting in. Will pick up the car tmrw or saturday depending on snow. They said this will retain cooling but prevent stones from getting in. No idea if this is standard bmw practice or not lol but they're ordering parts in order to do it so i assume it is. My dealership is Park Ave bmw in NJ

Given the two options, I'd pick the replacement part over having a dude weld something on my car. Seems like there's more room for error. Also, if BMW issued the replacement shield, I'd assume the cooling properties would be adequate. Maybe I'm being overly cautious?
