BMW M2 N55 will keep its value better then M2 S55 Compitition
What made the original m2 such a success it that it was old school M car with a great growling N55 engine with the power band well suited for the size of the car. The 2019 competition m2 5k us more than the 2018. Its 0 to 60 time is a meager 0.1 sec faster , its 125 lbs heavier, the back end is kinda bland looking with the resonator in your face. The exhaust sound is dull, and in turns of performance it lapped 7.52 at Nurburgring a mere 6 seconds faster the the original M2, its combined MPG is 19 versus 22 for the original M2.In dealing with its value both cars probably will not be collectables but it terms of retaining its value which would most people pick? The fun car that closer to the old school M cars or the detuned M4 selling as the new and improved M2?:

Whichever one you bought, that's the one that will retain its value the best.
In my case the LCI M2 in MG with manual transmission no sunroof. Only made LCI for 1 year which makes it more rare. MG not available for M2C so it's a more rare color. MT and no sunroof is the enthusiast choice. There you go, mine will be the most valuable M2 out there. I really think they'll both depreciate and there won't be a noticeable difference in the depreciation except how good condition it's in and how bad the specific buyer wants it. |

Wow
Some of your points such as looks and sound are subjective so I won't argue that. But there is nothing "mere" about a 6 secs difference on a track. Obviously the added weight to the M2C is a disappointment but the S55's power makes up for it. I think they will both hold value in similar ways. There are probably 2 types of buyers in the used market of the M2 and there will be plenty of demand for both cars. |

Funny thing is this already happened on the forums almost exactly 20 years ago. S52 Mcoupe owners tried their best to plead their case, "my car sounds better, it is lighter...blah blah blah". While S54 Mcoupe owners thought they cleary had the better car..."my car pulls harder to redline and is faster around a track...blah blah blah". S54 was the heavier engine, many didn't like the raspy exhaust note, performance numbers were not drastically different. All the same arguments. But if you look at Z3 Mcoupe values today, the S54 versions pull a much higher premium. Almost all the media have said the M2 Competition is the better car. But with that said the OG M2 is a great car as well. Honestly who cares, these things won't matter for another 20-25 years.

Still these debates have become so tiresome. The M2 and M2C are the best M cars available today and I don't understand why there has to be a divide as can't people just be happy with what they have and like without having to put down the version they don't have? |

Alot of the hype for m2c is from bootlicking journalists who just want to praise bmw for the newer version,
I do think the OG is in its own right has its strong points, But most ppl are sheep who go with rhe general consensus if new coke, but after a while theyll appreciate the original formula |

I didn't really want to comment but... I think it's a little different than that. For starters it's not about which car is faster for most people, they're both fast; it's about which provides the most value. If only speaking of which car I like better, I actually think I like the OG better out of the box, but would I pick it over the M2C? Absolutely not. The M2C improved upon almost every aspect except for sound. To list a few examples, steering, traction, transmission, brakes, and last but not least the engine. These small changes make them two completely different cars, and while the N55 power is immediate, its power band simply cannot compare to the S55. People who did some research will know that the N55 struggles to make power, overheating in stock form, and HPFP limiting the potential. The S55 in the other hand, simply needs a tune to make more power. Also weigh in the newer designs and the addition of M mirrors which a lot of ppl want. However the M2C definitely cannot compare to the OG in sound. At the end I believe people will realize that the advantage outweigh the disadvantage, but that's just my thought .

I am unable to drive the car really fast or really crazy in my location with the topography (lots of hills, curves, etc coupled with traffic!) without potentially wrecking it.
The sounds it makes downshifting makes up for it. In this manner, I like my OG M2 but also desire the M2 Competition. Both should retain good value.

Does the M2C being around tank the value of the OG? Maybe by a little bit, but nothing significant. There's too much of a price difference between even a used 18 LCI and a new 19 M2C. I think the way the car is spec'd will have more of an influence on how it sells in the future. Cars are almost never investments (unless you hit pay dirt with something like a 2JZ Supra). Drive it, enjoy it, and sell it when the time comes!

It will be interesting to see for sure. However in the future I think the following will help OG values:
Sound will attract a premium as electric cars come in and engines get smaller. A good sounding car will become rare. Cars are getting faster and faster. As a result the appeal of a slightly faster car will not be as important as the feel overall as electric cars will be a lot quicker anyway. Longevity is definitely in the OGs favour. As a long term ownership proposition it will be easier and less costly to maintain and will probably be able to do many more miles on average. This only applies to the pre lci but the classic dials and original interior will by the end of the production run make this the rarer car. I personally also think it looks miles better but everyone has their own opinion. |
