As long as the bottle says LL01 approved you'll be fine. Personally I would run 0w40 Castrol edge but I don't think it makes that much of a difference

Redline 0W-30 is LL-01 FE and is a group IV synthetic. Given all the oil pressure, volume, flow rate dependencies w/in the N55 (and all new BMW turbo engines), I wouldn't mess with viscosity. The old school rules don't apply.

But Pennzoil lists their Euro 5w40 as premium oil for our engines. Redline lists 5w30.

If you look up 0W30 on the Redline website, it lists the mfr requirements. Where are you looking?

0w30 is listed as to be used instead of 5w30 when in colder climates. Plus the 0w30 has NOACK OF 9% while 5w30 is 6%:

The whole recent move towards FE oils in the 0w20 to 0w30 range has more to do with emission guidelines and less to do with engine protection... the new FE designation with low HTHS on the same engines that BMW specified higher HTHS values a couple of years ago really has nothing to do with engine protection.

Here's what Quartz, one of the best oils, says about BMW engine HTHS requirements (and this is based on what BMW used to require):

The sticker under my hood reads 0W30 so that's what I'll use and given it's a //M car, the factory recommendation has other considerations outside of fuel economy. Although I do change the oil/filter every 5-7k miles or every other track day

Here's the grade recommendation by Pennzoil which is the official bmw oil:

No doubt Pennzoil has arrived at this recommendation but BMW has provided a conflicting one. If they are warranting the M engine through 50,000 miles through the factory, or beyond 50,000 in my individual case, I plan to stick with the motor oil viscosity the engine was designed around. Seems to make sense, from my perspective

The manual states that any oil that carries BMW LL01 oil is approved. Those LL01 oils only come in certain viscosities. 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30, 5w-40. I don't know how hot it gets in Boston summers, but you might want to look into the 40 weight oils if you're going to be tracking in the summer, more protection.

BMW wants 0W-30 in the car, so I'm sticking w/the factory recommendation - I'm just changing it more frequently. If it needed a thicker oil they would have specified it for different conditions (hot weather, track) Every current turbo M engine uses this oil viscosity and they all carry a 50k mile warranty, so that's enough reason for me.

You do you. Just don't spread misinformation. No where in the manual does it state 0w-30 is the ONLY viscosity approved or is what they want. What BMW wants for this engine and their other current turbo engines is a LL01 oil.

In the manual it doesn't mention any specific viscosities at all. It only states BMW Long Life 01 FE or BMW Long Life 01 approved oils should be use. You keep bringing up the 50k mile warranty which makes me believe you're not going to keep it past the 50k for very long. Others might and would want to protect their engines for the long haul in the event they use it in "severe conditions". I along with many others as shown in this thread and other oil threads switch to a 40 weight oil especially if tracking the vehicle due to the higher protection that 40 weight will provide in those "severe conditions" aka higher engine temps. I live in So Cal, all the tracks here are in the desert. I'm going to protect my engine with a 40 weight oil. My last free oil change the dealer put in 5w-30, going to switch that out before my next track day.

I think you're being inaccurate about misinformation. The sticker under the hood of my vehicle reads 0W-30. This is due to the car being sold in different markets and may support different fuel formulations. The LL01 is the required adequate standard for a long life, extended drain oil. That is the reason it does not say in the manual like it used to.

If you want to use heavier oil, that's your opinion. You're addressing a problem that doesn't exist and it's opinion-driven.

Did you read the link I posted? Has some useful info... I'm just trying to figure this out for myself rather than believing everything a manual says or what a sucker under the hood says... the reason for this is that's there has been a recent change and there is good evidence it has to do with emission standards and car companies saving money... in all honestly, it will probably not make much of a difference in the short term but if you're planning on having a good running engine well beyond the warranty period then it's critical to use what's best for the engine. I'm open to evidence from either camp so if anyone has evidence of thinner or thicker please share and let's figure this out together!

The best source for engine oil information is at bobistheoilguy.com. Those guys are hardcore on the subject matter. The 0W-30 oil our car comes with is probably fine for many applications but to expect one oil to be appropriate for such a wide variety of environmental conditions and driving demands is unrealistic so I wish BMW would do more to provide its own recommendations. Short of that a source as mentioned above or a great tuner such as bimmerworld are great sources of solid information. I live in AZ so its very hot and a track my car so I am using Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W-40. Having said that there are many great choices out there. Also if your really concerned it's worth doing a oil analysis from time to time also to help set your intervals and oil selection rather than picking a random number of miles to change.

Would this lead to more carbon build up though? That's not going to be BMW's problem at 50k or less miles.

BMW put 0W-30 in for my most recent oil change in Nothern California. Not sure if that's the best choice.
