Pre turbo era F1. Listen to the purity of this sound and try not to cry as to what's been lost.

This guy gets it! There's exhaust noise and engine noise---very different things. BMW doesn't make many street legal M engines with a pleasant exhaust note, particularly within the last 15 yrs. The exhaust in my S65 sounds ok--but it's benign. Or terrible IMO, when people basically gut the exhausts on these.
But the engine noise when uncorked a little with an intake? Best sounding engine I've ever heard in a reasonably priced car. |

The S55 is a joke, i have heard it numerous times on open roads and track days, especially with aftermarket systems (from M Performance to Akrapovic) sounds really bad.
A few people said "it sounds great", i just raised an eyebrow and shook my head. |

My uncle told me he hates how M3s are "so loud."
He works in tech and adores Tesla.

the road is dead flat.my euro e36 m3 evo vert, relevant mods schrick 284 cams, stock ecu so fueling not right needs a remap but still eats e46 m3 for breakfast lol , uprated injectors, eisenmann race exhaust with dtm tips 86mm, quickshift gear linkage, viscous delete, aluminium rad and larger oil cooler, full vanos rebuild, shims done, all new oem sensors and coil packs on engine. lightened and balanced flywheel with m5 clutch, low ratio diff, kwv3 coilovers, H&R adjustable anti roll bars, Ferrari f40 brembo GT calipers on front porsche 996 brembos on rear with e46 m3 csl floating discs all round,Racelogic digital traction and launch control, michelin pilot super sport tyres etc etc finally got her running spot on so its time to fit the mac motoren carbon airbox and ring chip wizards for a remap. This may get some people riled up but I have noticed that every eight cylinder MB I have owned it sounds better from the factory than any stock eight cylinder BMW I have owned. MB dials in the exhaust note fairly well from the factory and when equipped with a valved exhaust it is almost perfect in terms of conservative when needed and spirited or more lively when desired. Why does BMW have difficulty with this and the inability to suppress the shift burps on their 4cyl/6cyl applications?

Much as I love barky V8s and howling V10s, it’s the solid-wall-of-induction-noise of bmw straight sixes that make the brand for me. I dont think i heard anything sound better than this it sounds like a device for sawing whole buildings in half.

to me bmw will always be an i6. similar belief with porsche. the fact that they're going FI kind of is a turn-off.

it has it's pros but it is not my preference despite having owned a few different FI BMW and enjoyed them. currently in a Dinan S2 '18 X5M and it is jam packed with fun but i would not say it is something i love.
