Minor oil leak, anybody else experience this?

I just noticed some leakage and residue, so far there are no major issues but I'm wanting to get this fixed sooner rather than later.

Just wondering if anybody has any experience with this on the n55 and can share some advice.

Thanks

A couple of possible scenarios:

1) Oil was spilled during oil filter removal

2) Your oil filter housing gasket is failing, check for greasiness around that area

3) Oil filter cover is cracking or o-ring isn't properly seated.

Thank you for your response.

My suspicions fall in line with #2 and #3. I'll check under the hood every week or so.

The last oil change I had was a few months and roughly 3000 miles ago, but I just noticed this leak today.

The OFHG is a common point of failure on n55s so that's certainly a possibility

Hope you get it taken looked at soon. Happened to my m235i. If it's really bad, you can see oil seeping out from a faulty o-ring gasket when your engine is the running.

Appreciate the advice fellas..

Definitely getting this looked at ASAP.

Fortunately the leak isn't terrible, I watched the area with the engine running while parked for a while and couldn't even tell where exactly it was leaking from. Which led me to seek assistance here.

Just going to get it checked out on Monday, as I have a some other maintenance planned that day as well.

Cheers all

First I've hear of an Oil Filter Housing Gasket problem. Do we know what the root cause is (bad design, bad gasket material, etc.)? With so many N55s out in the wild, I would have thought that after market suppliers would have come to the rescue by now!

I intend on keeping mine long term so I'm interested in solving problems as early as possible.

It's a very common issue on higher mileage cars. IMO it is not a design issue, or a gasket issue etc. This issue is just due to mileage and heat cycling causing the rubber gasket to age and dry up, this leads to cracking of the seal and thus leaks. This is pretty common on any rubber seal on any car.

Then you just replace the seal - personally I would do it preemptively before the oil leaks onto the serpentine belt and causes it to slip. Just make sure you prime the engine as per bmw's SIB whenever you mess with the oil supply, or else you will cause bearing failure.

Overall this is nothing terribly uncommon, it is just the way things are when rubber gets old.

You don't get a new o-ring with the filter?

All Oil Filter kits I've used come with new Oil seals for filter housing and one for internal plastic housing. More likely it was a damaged seal than a worn and dried out one, as most oil is changed 3-5 thousand miles on these engines.

this commonly failed gasket we're talking about is for the oil filter HOUSING not the oil filter itself. do a quick google on it. It's common and should be added to preventative maintenance along with other commonly failed parts.

Yup exactly, it's where the oil filter housing bolts to the block, and yes gasket is a much better term - I couldn't recall the proper words late last night lol.

Okay, something to keep an eye on as the mileage climbs. Thanks!

Did you ever determine the cause?

Oil filter housing gasket failure. Nothing major, just had to an early oil change.

What was your mileage when you detected this? Trying to determine when to change mine as a part of preventative maintenance.

Sorry I accidentally added the "housing part", and that wasn't the issue.

What I meant was that It was just the oil filter gasket that you change during the oil change when you swap filters.

I believe it's always good practice to look under the hood often and just make sure nothing is leaking
