DCT won't upshift but the gear indicator does change
I've run into an issue 3 times in the last 10k miles in which I am in sport+ and in auto-mode when I do a pull up to around 6500-7k in 3rd and then let off. but since I don't like it to hang the revs up there in sport+, I'll then tap the paddle once or twice to upshift into a higher gear. the dash will show me now in manual 5th, but the revs haven't dropped. I can continue to shift up/down with the paddles all the way up to 7th and the indicator will change to match, but the revs stay where they're at. pop the shifter to the right to put it back in auto mode, the dash will show the change, but still the revs still hang.
It usually takes about 10-15 seconds for it to finally decide to upshift for real. no relevant error codes have been found in a scan. I've tried to replicate the conditions to get to happen again with no luck. but then a couple months later, it randomly happens again. any ideas? hard to have the dealer look it when it is so hard to replicate. |

Sounds strange...
Are you in or out of warranty & how many miles?

If you do the same action, but in manual mode, does it hang still? If you do the same action, but leave it in auto and just let it ride until it upshifts on its own, what happens?

I don't normally take that offramp in manual mode. I had previously thought about when it gets in that weird mode, would accelerating to force it to upshift work? perhaps, but I don't really want to have to go that fast. I've already maxed out my comfort for the pull in that area. don't really want to have to try to see if I can pull harder to get it to decide to shift into 4th or would it just bounce off the rev-limiter. |

Honestly I would pull codes first. You'll have faults or info stored in error memory and/or information memory even without lights.

as previously mentioned, no codes were found
if there had been codes, then I'd have something for the dealer to look at. but since there are no codes, then its a wild-goose chase for them if we can't recreate it on demand. |

I have DCT on my 135i and whenever it starts misbehaving I take it a local indy BMW shop and they reset all the DCT adaptations etc.
Takes them about 10 minutes and the car drives great for another 50k miles. |

I’ve noticed that sometimes when I’m in auto mode and there’s a traction control event it takes a while for a up shift to occur. I think the computer is waiting till there’s no wheel slip detected.

That transmission and gear behavior is a bit concerning.

Happens to me aswell. It's something with the logic of the DCT shifting better when on throttle. So just upshift when ur on the throttle.
If you notice it also upshifts right away if u touch the throttle |

Anyone that drives their DCT in anything other than manual mode other than in car parks or stop start traffic needs to be punished. The car is punishing you. So endeth the lesson.

I daily drive mine in auto most of the time. During enthusiastic street driving and track use I switch to manual mode. Bring out the whips and chains!

While that is strange behavior, you should upshift while on throttle. Letting off throttle and then upshifting confuses the gearbox. Perhaps try switching it to comfort mode rather than upshift manually and let it pick a higher gear then go back to sport+ if you want? Honestly I never drive in auto mode so I'm not sure the normal behavior of auto sport+ and then manual shift while still in auto mode.
I agree with others though. Reset adaptions, change dct fluids if nothing is obvious. |
