Hotter Bmw M2 Spied Up Close

Quote:
Could this be the rumored BMW M2 GTS/CSL?

A prototype of a hardcore BMW M2 has recently been spied close to the company’s testing facility in Nurburg, Germany, suggesting we will finally see a new addition to the sports car range very soon. The mule’s front end is still covered in heavy camouflage, but it's not enough to hide the significantly more aggressive fascia with larger air intakes in the bumper. At the back, there’s a massive fixed rear wing.

All those aerodynamic details are specific to the track-focused GTS versions, but the M2 might end up wearing the CSL moniker. The “top-of-the-line track tool, made on the track for the track” is rumored to receive a massaged 3.0-liter turbocharged engine with peak power in the region of 450 horsepower (336 kilowatts), making it by far the most powerful member of the 2 Series family.

Torque should be close to the M3/M4’s 406 pound-feet (550 Newton-meters). At this point it’s not clear whether the vehicle will use a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Inside the cabin, the track toy will feature a roll cage, M Performance steering wheel, and carbon fiber decorations. Alcantara-covered sports seats will complete the interior package. The range-topper will also get cup tires and coilover suspension, and might lose its rear seats.

According to a member of the German car forum 2ertalk, the M2 GTS/CSL will go into production in March 2019. It will be highly limited to only 1,000 units, all wearing a matching hefty price.

We expect to see more prototypes of the flagship M2 testing in the next couple of months, accompanied by additional technical details, so stay tuned.

Again, the M2 testmule in the referenced video has no rear wing - just the regular M2 Gurney flap.

See post #942 of this thread.

Seriously though. The aerodynamics of most M cars is actually worse than the lower models, and I'm sure the 'M mirrors' indeed are partly to blame.

I'll have to go find the Cd of the 228 vs M235/M240 vs the M2.
The aero difference would be absolutely negligible for a street car even light track duty. Completely irrelevant. It was purely cost and marketing.

So now that I have my M2, I actually really hate the mirrors. It's the one thing that doesn't quite fit the character car. I can even excuse the seats. But I have to look at those dumbo ear mirrors, identical to my X1, every time I'm driving.

If the CS has the M mirrors, then we should be able to easily retrofit. Waiting on IND.
That sounds like you just ignored the actual facts and simply restated your personal reasons for not liking them. ?

http://www.motortrend.com/news/2016-...st-review/amp/

" The M2 runs through 1,320 feet in 12.8 seconds at 107.5 mph. The M4? Noticeably quicker: 12.5 seconds at 116.5 mph. The reason for the discrepancy there is simple: The M2 has a higher coefficient of drag (0.35 versus 0.34, with similar frontal area) and 14 percent fewer horsepower, but only 2.9 percent less mass to accelerate. "

Cd- M2 - 0.35
Cd- m235 - 0.33
CD- 228 - 0.29

Cd- M4 is 0.34

So... Presuming a BMW engineer didn't straight up lie to consumers, if BMW had placed ' M MIRRORS " on the M2 it would be even *slower * compared to the M4 ... and even closer to the M235 /M240 than it is currently. That might be a bigger problem for BMW than people on forums worried about mirrors.

I mean seriously, since it does appear to be primarily about vanity for you, your aftermarket purchase of an ' m mirror solution' will be welcomed by a vendor who has no reason to care about your vehicle performance , but rather instead making it look visually more attractive (to you ).

The fact that you are so incensed by the mirrors just proves that bmw was correct. Just like the folks over at Porsche , They can hustle about 15k out of some chaps over things like " ///M mirrors " carbon fiber trim pattern , ///M buttons , and ' ///M seats ' , ///M carbon fiber roof" let alone performance items.

Nice move by BMW ,an ///M carbon fiber hand brake lever is probably next !

I'm actually truly amazed that BMW hasn't got "///M performance mirrors " for you .... they are totally missing out.
LOL

right so the reason for the difference is definitely mirrors not the fact that the cars are dimensionally completely different in every aspect. You got me there bud.

in the end I see no evidence that mirrors would materially make a performance difference either way. it's the aero of the car as a whole.

My bet is that it was likely wind noise that was reduced with current mirrors. Either with Windows up or down.

Front bumper design is likely being updated. Maybe they incorporated aerodynamic updates to allow for M mirrors. Need to wait and see.

I'm wondering 3 things. Will we get a CF roof, special hood and good seats for the CS?

The 228, m235 and M2 are all " dimensionally completely different in every aspect... " ... ? ummm.. ok.. ? they DO all have the same mirrors.... and one can see that as BMW adds more " M styling " the car actually gets LESS aerodynamic... BMW of course usually attempts to add more power to the higher line vehicles to help them attempt to overcome the aero disadvantages, something which they were easily able to do for decades with a bespoke Motor for the M car.

Now that the differences in trim level is almost down to simply just a tune .. the M235 actually accelerates better than the M2 in certain gears.

CF roof- 100 percent NO.

Special hood- possible .. but based on test mules to date.. NOT LIKELY I would guess around a 25 percent chance.

"good " is a relative term... many people already say the M2 has " good seats" -

Will there be DIFFERENT, or upgraded seats ? Of the three items you asked about.. this has the greatest chance of occurring.

I hope so, im basing my waiting game decision partially on at least one of these things happening.

The driver's seat is different than the passenger seat in those pics above... Looks like the M3/M4 seat with blue stitching which makes sense based on the VIN info recently. Artemis

If you look at previous releases that seems to be the way to go. M3 CS would then be the Detroit and Brussels release together with e.g. the X2, X4 could be at Geneva as well, X7 at Shanghai. i8 and i8 facelift are clearly LA together with the facelifted BMW 2 Series Active Divorce. The Grand Divorce is EOP (luckily).

The other stuff follows later, but this could well be the first part of the year.

Wait, what?? Any more info about the M3 CS?

I’m trying to plan a double European Delivery with a buddy around September next year, and all of a sudden we may have a cornucopia of choices for cars. Is there a separate thread of more info about the upcoming M3 CS?

We should hear/see more of the M3 CS soon.

There was a thread on the M3/M4 forum for the M3 CS but the mod seems to be too skeptical.

Had pointed that out in post #942 of this thread:
  • base M2 driver's seat was replaced by the one-piece seat (forthcoming option 712: "M Sports Seat") + all other seats are base M2 seats (passenger seats front and rear);

I don't know the answer.

M2 Competition US spec VINs that are known in the meantime over here (see here), indicate October 2016 as earliest build dates.

Have you come across anything as to what leather the M sports seats would get? I'm fairly certain the M3/4 w/comp pack comes with Napa leather M sport seats. That would be a huge upgrade to the interior if it gets the same.
