No more BMWs

I have had 4 M cars, my last purchased Oct 2023, a beautiful 2021 M2C. Big surprise as well as disappointment when the clicking sound from the engine led to BMWs determinization that it needs a new engine, not covered by their “top secret” voiding of the warranty for “overrevving” that occurred prior to my ownership. Never again!!

Not gonna lie, the service within warranty left much to be desired for me as well. I did not have any catastrophic issue like yours but minor issues and the dealer was very meh. I will buy another BMW in the future but it will be a pre 2012 car.

That said I feel like what happened to you could have happened with a lot of brands, they got your money now and that is a big expense. Sorry that happened to you, Id fix it and enjoy the car because the M2 is a fantastic car (I have moved on to something else but really enjoyed my 2 years on the M2)

Oddly enough I've owned many luxury brands and have had my best experiences with BMW, part of what brought me back was how much better they were than the others.

Having said that I haven't had anything major like this happen so who knows under those circumstances...

wait, how is it BMW's fault your car was abused by the previous owner, then dumped at a Bentley dealer? I mean, you're not the original owner, know nothing of prior maintenance or abuse, took a shot and lost... If you had bought the car from a BMW store you'd have a leg to stand on, but in this situation, I hate to say it you're SOL unless your state protects you, as I mentioned in your other thread.

OP is the second new member to sign up recently only to post how their motor is toast after buying from a used car lot. Then they whine about how the prior owner over revved it and proceed to bad mouth the OEM like they’ve been done wrong by BMW.

Man up and take responsibility for your own actions.

Please Google “PPI” and take some basic personal finance classes.

Move along.

A PPI will not show an overrev at the dealer level.

well unless he got it PPI at bmw and asked them to let em know if warranty was still intact, apparently they had voided it already. But of course woulda shoulda coulda.

Although I do agree that technically this is not BMWs fault, he bought it used from a non bmw dealer so they are off the hook but sometimes you want to do a good faith repair, I think in the end would be better for them. Even if they are not going to offer him a new engine + labour, at least pay for the labor or something like that. They now lost a client so in the long run they will loose more than gain by not trying to help

PPI would not find out about the voided BMW warranty. Keeping that information unavailable to future buyers is what is both unfair and unethical.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but, it's a slippery slope if you are the manufacturer. Where do you draw the line with good will repairs on cars that were operated outside design specs? Also, let's be honest here, and I'll speak for myself but I'm sure it applies to others here, as a car enthusiast I have pretty much 0 brand loyalty as I want to try all the cool cars. What is the value of a client (in the OP's case) who buys your product used?

The client has value in multiple ways: Firstly, keeping a healthy market for used cars is really important because it keeps the resale value high and people are more likely to buy your cars new because they will not lose that much money on them. Secondly, who is to say he will not buy a new one (or heck even a used one) directly from the BMW dealer? Especially a one who saved him a lot of money. And thirdly, I bet the guy has a few friends who buy the cars new. And if he badmouths BMW they might not even consider it (especially since there is a lot of competition nowadays).

So fuck yeah. Such a client has a looot of value.

Maybe, but we're not talking about covering a leaky water pump outside of warranty. We're talking about covering a $30k engine that has been over revved. Big difference there. And also, what precedent does it set? How many other engines will you as a manufacturer have to replace because people abuse them? Where does it end?

it’s easy to pull over rev report and do engine compression check. I had it done on pre owned cars and it’s pretty much a requirement for selling manual Porshes

I would’ve sprung for a new M2 but I’ll have to wait for the redesign. Not a fan of the front end.

Doubt it. Probably back to Audi. Actually, I am selling my R8 next week. Keeping the M2 and awaiting the verdict on repair price from an independent shop. Don’t think they’ll say $39,500 for a new engine.

If you are dumping the car after engine replacement, I would suggest buying a used motor for ~$4k, there are a lot of them available.

If you want to keep it, get a built long block from VAC, Carbahn, etc. and make a monster.

Just a suggestion. Sorry for your troubles...

I’m just now leaving the car with the mechanic. I’m leaning towards your idea of making a monster. I’ll see what the prices are.
