That gated shifter... They're fun for road driving, kind of annoying on a track when you're trying to downshift really fast into a corner. Also, be prepared to start throwing money at Audi if you need any services done. R8s are not cheap to maintain; it's basically a Lambo Gallardo (assuming you got a V10)? If not... The 4.2l V8 has had some timing chain issues, but those may have been resolved for the R8. A TTRS is actually quicker around most tracks and more practical than the V8 R8 though... but will never have the same balance or rear-biased feel. I have to imagine that was in a much different price bracket than RS3s or M2s though?? I've never seen an R8 below 80-90k or so... I went and sat in an S3 with the S-sport seats, which should be identical interior-wise to an RS3. I'm 6'3"-6'4". I could just barely fit in the car with my helmet on, but only with the seat height all the way down and even then my helmet was basically against the headliner. Bumpy track or anything bad happening would probably mean instant neck injury, not good at all. Plus, since the seats don't have a movable headrest, you can't put Schroth quickfit belts into it. The sunroof is not deletable on the RS3 in the US, so if you're a tall person and might HPDE or autocross the car, make sure you go test for size. It wouldn't work for me. (This is kind of good, because it makes my decision much easier.) M2 OTOH has a *ton* of head room without a sunroof, and still has power seats with memory, and the headrests move so Schroth harnesses should work.

Thanks. Good intel. I'm 6'2, but don't plan to track the R8... it will be my daily driver. I was disappointed that the RS3 seems to have the pano roof stock along with the auto only made the R8 more appealing, even if the RS3 ends up faster. I do have dedicated race cars which are more fun than any street car. I do my own service and its only got 25k miles on it so not too worried; R8 is more reliable than any other super car, and parts cost is not too bad. The old tech is no biggie; I don't use that stuff anyway. I use my iPhone for nav, and can use an SD card for my music so no biggie there. Its got super car looks, super-Cayman handling and glorious sound from the mid-engined V8; should be good enough

I'll be saving about $1,500 in tax with the trade in deal. but if i can sell it for $4-5k more privately, wouldn't it be worth it for me to do so? as i understand it, for the latter, i just give them a check for the pre-agreed amount for the car + the tax. I'll still be at least a couple thousand dollars ahead, even after paying tax on the sale of my car + the tax for the trade in.

I love that because it's 4dr, it's a "limousine."
we should've gotten the hatch.

There are no other performance-oriented compact sedans on the market other than the S3/RS3. Everything else has become too big. |

You say "boy racer," I say "way more utility than a sedan."
At least give us the option... or suck it up and offer us a "Golf RS" with the same 5cyl in it to satisfy those who want hatches.

Pretty sure the CLA45 falls squarely in that category and is pretty much the same size as the RS3.

Even other "coupes" (435iGC, or A5Sportback for example) have a hatch in the back to sort of seem coupe-ish. The CLA has a regular trunk. |

I will say that the RS3 looks to be really nice. Maybe that 5-cylinder engine can liven up the car some. I like my Golf R but it is a pretty boring car and the DSG does not help it any in that area.

I've had a deposit for a M2 since last April and should be #1 for the 2018 model. I recently talked with an Audi dealership and can get a RS3 for a discount. I'll be paying MSRP for the M2.
Been waiting so long for the M2 (with no ETAs yet), but Audi can give me an Aug production date with Sept delivery. I've had 3 AWD cars in the past and was looking forward to RWD. Not sure if I should hold out for the M2 (which I haven't had the best dealer experience) or move to Audi. My heart says M2, but my experience with BWM hasn't been the best. |

If you want to track or autocross and you're tall, sit in an RS3 with your helmet before you buy. If you can't arrange that, sit in an S3 + "S-sport" seat package + moonroof, since that is identical to an RS3.
There is NOT a lot of headroom in the car with the stupid moonroof. Completely took it out of the running for me. Also, you can't use Schroth quickfit harnesses with the seats because the headrest is fixed and there are no shoulder holes. OTOH, knowing Canada, somehow you guys will have the option to delete the moonroof that we don't get in the US. (Just like your ability to order an M2 with one, that many of the people in the nicer-weather states would give a few fingers for...)

I hope to track whatever car I pick, but won't be a regular activity. Just a couple times a year. I'm not that tall and all limbs lol. Never have a problem with headspace.
It'll be around a $5k price difference. How each dealer has treated me, I want to give Audi my business! They have been much easier to work with. I've never had a performance RWD car and prefer to have manual, so the M2 is preferred. I'm thinking I'll wait a couple weeks to see if BMW can tell me when they are getting their first 2018 allocation (I'm #1 for 2018). When I first put a deposit down last year, I was told I'll get it on spring of 2017. Come early 2017, it moved to "all 2017 are sold out" and I wasn't notified till I reached out several times. With Audi, sent an email, 3 or 4 emails later they found an Aug production build open (3rd on their list), and discounted . He will hold that allocation for me till end of May with no deposit required. |
