Fuel Tank Mileage

Sometimes when I fill up it says 300 miles until empty. Sometimes when I fill up it says 277 miles until empty. Same fuel (93, at Shell). Anyone know a reason for the variance in miles until empty?

its basing it on your recent fuel economy.

Biggest fault on the car is that stupid small fuel tank.

Agreed. The tank size made sense on the donor 2 series - I use to get 500-550km (420-450m) on my M235i, but that’s down to 400-450km (250-280m) on the M2 CS.

Makes sense. I’m usually mostly in Sport Plus.

But the catch 22 if the fuel tank were bigger everyone would complain about the added weight which would show in the published vehicle stats.

Delete some weight elsewhere, like the trunk lid, door panels or optional rear seat delete and give me a larger tank. I know some of you guys love those rear seats, but mine will never be used.

I agree the tank is way too small for around town driving, averaging under 18 MPG regularly. However, I went on a 2300 mile road trip in August from Dallas to the Performance Center in South Carolina and averaged almost 28 MPG for the entire trip, including some very spirited driving on the Tail of the Dragon. There were several 300-400 mile journeys of 30 MPG and a couple of 50 mile outings of 15 MPG. I was shocked how high of an overall average I achieved for the entire trip!

I noticed my average mileage has increased over the year about 10%. Realised it’s because I drive in efficient more than sport throttle more once I added the Akra. At this rate it will pay itself off in 200 years

My z3m coupes had a similar small tank and we just lived with it.

I bet the computer takes into account recent use when calculating future outcomes. I’ve not noticed myself on the bmw but I do know that Mercedes does. It’s a discussion we have had at the dinner table often.

I get 3.8 MPG on the track. Yes I agree, the small tank is a big fail. The small fuel tank allows for 25 min ish of continious driving on track.

With that said, it's FAF (Fast As F**K) so that makes up for these small annoyances.

FYI you have about half a gallon of fuel left in the tank when the mileage estimate reaches “- -“. Thank the lord because that would have suuuuucked.

it would be interesting to see what the mpg would be with a reduced boost map

there was one guy who actually reduced boost on his f80 and also did e30/e85 so the turbos would spool up quicker. making 350whp on a 5psi map or something just to chase that NA feel. he seemed pretty happy with it.

My distance to empty estimate is always extremely optimistic right after a fill-up. Reality usually sets in by about 1/2 tank.

^^^This. It's a thirsty beast on track, but it surprises the hell out of people. Normally I'd like to start a session with a partial tank. Nope, gotta start full.

For those of us getting just a bit older, the smaller fuel tank goes well with the increasing need to find bathroom.

Kidding aside, the tank is really small for the car.

For the love of all that is holy, we literally plan even our short trips on where the wife can pee.

Correct. Estimate based on past fuel consumption. Cruise on the highway, refuel and you may get a 500+ km range displayed. Go for a spirited drive in the mountains or go pedal to the metal on long stretches of Autobahn, refuel and you may get 200+ km range displayed (if subsequently you cruise, range keeps increasing).

Piece of night clubbing advice: *never* drink from that out-of-sight beer glass at a DJ booth. Most DJs prefer staying next to their turntables during their DJ sets.
