Wheel Dings/Scratches From Driving?
After a drive this morning I noticed this damage on my front drivers side wheel. It definitely wasn't there before the drive, and it isn't curb rash because I didn't park anywhere and it would have been on the opposite side. I managed to get most of the paint off but it's not 100% gone.
Anyone else experience damage like this on their wheels? Is there a paint code so I can do a touch up? Thanks. |

You hit something in the road. I've done it myself. You'd be surprised what kind of damage something small can do, especially when turning.

Thats the most likely explanation because of the paint, but I honestly don't see how that could have happened. I would be the first to admit if I hit something by mistake. Perhaps I just didn't notice.

I had a random scratch on one rear wheel.spoke like a Stanley knife and another spoke is a bit damaged seemingly.from hitting something while driving rather than hitting anything I recall.

Eh it doesn't really bother me that much since I won't see it while driving. I only put about 3k miles/year on it so it'll be a while before I put some Michelins on.

My guess is one of these raised refill caps that some gas stations have, only raised even higher. Or a similarly raised valve cover somewhere.

The best way is either ignore or powder coat. Personally I powder coated then sold it and went to Volks |

I tried once to get some decent curb rash touched up and it looked terrible. I only found one place locally (DC area) who would even attempt to refinish the whole wheel - no one wanted anything to do with the tinted clear coat. The guy I ended up going with stripped the clear coat, re-machined the entire thing (just the machined part, obviously), and custom tinted the clear to match a second wheel I left with him.
In the end it looks basically perfect. The machining is a touch different than the original finish, but you can only tell if you're looking at it right next to an untouched wheel, which basically never happens. I'm no expert on the wheel refinishing business, but I have a hard time seeing how someone would get a really good result from a touch up. Needless to say I'm very careful with curbs, etc. |

Having experienced two damaged wheels, one from a curb I didn't see, and the other from a no-mar (right!) tire machine, I have not had much luck with wheel repair, at least in the Seattle area. The problem with the damage you show is the diamond cut machining on the lip (and spokes) is very difficult to repair to a discerning eye, and the smoked clear coat is very difficult to match. If you are very picky about your wheels, any repair will not appear satisfactory.

I recently had 3 rims repaired due to curb rash. Couldn't be happier with the results. So worth the $485. Actually took it to the dealership and they outsourced to a guy in Austin.

On something that small i would just maybe do a bit of fine wet sanding to get the red off. Overall, I’m not sure it’s worth the refinish cost.
